Prices for Viagra and sildenafil at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart have held steady for the last four months.

The prices of Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, at America’s three largest retail pharmacy chains were unchanged in November 2019. In fact, prices for these very popular erectile dysfunction drugs have remained the same at CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart since August 2019.

Although no clear-cut rationale for the apparent price freeze is offered, it’s possible that retailers are holding the line pricewise in anticipation of increased competition beginning in April 2020. At that time, Pfizer’s final U.S. patent on Viagra will expire. That will open the door to increased generic competition, which will put pressure on the pricing strategies of not just brand-name Viagra but also the generic versions of the drug already on the market.

Nearly $160 Billion in Revenues

With combined prescription drug revenues of $159.5 billion in 2018, CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart are the leading prescription drug retailers in the United States. This figure, provided at DrugChannels.net, covers prescription drug sales at the brick-and-mortar stores of these chains but not mail orders.

Because pills of both Viagra and sildenafil cost the same, regardless of strength, cost-conscious shoppers usually buy the higher-strength pill (100-milligram) and then split it into two 50-milligram doses. Taking advantage of this pricing protocol, unique to the prescription drug industry, consumers can effectively get two doses for the price of one.

In November, the price for a 100-milligram tablet of Viagra at CVS was $77.48, or $38.74 for a 50-milligram dose. This price was unchanged from its posted levels in August, September, and October, according to Secure Medical’s monthly review of prescription drug prices.

Walgreens Price for Viagra

The November price for 100-milligram Viagra at Walgreens was $77.51, or $38.76 for a 50-milligram dose. This, too, was unchanged from August.

With a price of only $75.19 for a 100-milligram tablet of Viagra, Walmart had the lowest price of the top three U.S. pharmacies. This price put the cost of a 50-milligram dose at $37.60. And, here again, Walmart’s prices were unchanged from August through November.

Also unchanged were these retailers’ prices for sildenafil. A 100-milligram tablet of the generic drug was $14.78 ($7.39 per 50-milligram dose) at CVS, $15.85 ($7.93) at Walgreens, and $25.79 ($12.90) at Walmart during November. These prices were unchanged from August.
