The average prices for Viagra were little changed over the final six months of 2019. However, a bit more turbulence was seen in average prices for sildenafil, Viagra’s generic equivalent.

Prices for Viagra moved within a relatively narrow range during the second half of 2019, while those for its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, were significantly more volatile.

These results are based on Secure Medical’s monthly review of prescription drug prices at 18 pharmacy retailers — 15 that operate brick-and-mortar shops and three that operate exclusively online.

Most Popular ED Drugs

Together, Viagra and sildenafil remain the most popular erectile dysfunction drugs, capturing an estimated 65 percent share of the market between December 1, 2018, and January 31, 2019, according to CNBC.com.

The prices quoted in this blog post for both Viagra and sildenafil are for 100 mg tablets. Because the price for 50 mg and 100 mg tablets are identical, many consumers prefer to purchase the higher-strength pill and split it in half to yield two doses of 50 mg, which is the recommended starting dose. Splitting pills in this fashion in effect gives consumers two doses for the price of one. However, not all prescription drugs should be split, so check with your doctor before splitting any other medications that you take regularly.

Viagra Prices Relatively Steady

Among all 18 pharmacy retailers included in Secure Medical monthly pricing reviews, the average price for Viagra in July 2019 was $79.28. It dropped 2.9 percent in August to $76.99 and remained there through September. It inched up a very modest six cents to $77.05 in October and another 16 cents to $77.21 in November. At year’s end, Viagra’s price fell 50 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $76.71 in December.

As previously noted, the prices for sildenafil were a bit more volatile during the second half of 2019. They began the six-month period with an average price of $33.56 in July. They dropped 25.8 percent to $24.89 in August and remained there through October. In November, the average price for sildenafil dipped 24 cents to $24.65. In December, sildenafil’s average price dropped another 24 cents to $24.41.

It’s all summarized in the following graph.

Pfizer’s Final US Patents to Expire

Pfizer, which first introduced Viagra in 1998, will lose its final U.S. patents on the little blue pill in April 2020. This should open the door to increased generic competition. Viagra has faced limited generic competition since December 11, 2017, when Teva Pharmaceuticals began marketing its generic version under an agreement it struck with Pfizer in late 2013.

In the two years since Teva’s generic Viagra came to market, the only other generic version of the little blue pill has been marketed by Greenstone LLC, which is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Pfizer.
