Introduction

Men and women suffering from chronic health conditions sometimes lose sight of all the behind-the-scenes work that’s going on in an effort to find more effective ways of treating and perhaps even curing those conditions. Dedicated medical researchers in virtually every speciality work diligently to develop new medications or other forms of treatment that will make life easier for those suffering from such conditions. Most of their endeavors go unheralded in the mainstream press, and it is rarely that this research is publicized until a major breakthrough occurs.

Group of scientists with microscopes and glass beakers.
Peer-reviewed medical journals report on the latest research studies and what they are likely to mean for the future of medicine.

It is in the pages of the medical journals that the minutiae of this research is chronicled. Finding a promising new treatment involves going through a lengthy series of steps, usually beginning with extensive laboratory and animal testing. Only if results from those tests prove promising and generally safe does the research move forward into the clinical testing phase. At this stage of the process, researchers actually recruit human volunteers to participate in testing to determine if the new treatment is effective in humans.

These research efforts have led to important breakthroughs in the treatment of of erectile dysfunction, not the least of which has been the development of Viagra and the other oral ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. Viagra and the other drugs that followed dramatically altered the treatment of ED. In the years that have followed, researchers have found that many of the active ingredients in the ED medications have added medicinal properties that could make them useful in the treatment of other medical conditions as well.

To stay on top of medical research into erectile dysfunction and possible improvements in its treatment, there is a select number of scholarly, or peer-reviewed, journals that routinely cover this and related topics. To help you find the journals that showcase the latest in ED research, we’ve selected nine of the most influential and ranked them based on a variety of factors.

What’s a Peer-Reviewed Journal?

To ensure that the content on their pages is of the very highest quality, all content in medical and other scientific journals is peer-reviewed or refereed. The articles that appear in journal pages are written by experts in their fields. But before the articles can be published, they are carefully scrutinized by other experts to ensure that the studies they detail and the research methods have been properly conducted.

This rigorous screening protocol ensures that only high-quality research is reported in the pages of these journals. Peer review is unlike the ordinary copy editing process, which focuses on correcting mistakes in grammar or spelling and clearing up seemingly contradictory statements in the text. Peer review looks closely at the nature of the study that’s the subject of the article and reviews its methodology, results, and the conclusions drawn from those results to make sure that they are sound.

About the Journals

Medical journals cover every specialty and subspecialty in the world of medicine. Some are very broad in their scope, covering multiple disciplines and specialties. Included in this broad category would be publications such as “JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association,” “The New England Journal of Medicine,” and “The BMJ,” originally known as the British Medical Journal.

We have chosen to look at nine journals that regularly carry studies about ED and related topics. Most of these journals focus on the medical specialty of urology, which encompasses diseases and disorders of the male and female urinary tract systems, as well as the male reproductive organs.

Included in our rankings are “The Journal of Urology,”
“European Urology,”
“Nature Reviews Urology,”
“BJU International,”
“The Journal of Sexual Medicine,”
“Urology,”
“World Journal of Urology,”
“International Journal of Impotence Research,” and “Andrologia.”

Ranking Criteria

To rank these nine scholarly journals, all of them distinguished and highly regarded within the medical specialties they cover, we judged each on five key factors. These include the years of publication, number of ED-related articles printed from 2013 through 2017, the Journal Impact Factor, SJR, and CiteScore. To each of these criteria was attached a specific percentage weight to reflect its relative importance.

While the first two of these criteria speak for themselves, the others may not be so familiar. The Journal Impact Factor, calculated annually by Clarivate Analytics, measures the frequency with which a journal’s average article has been cited in a given year. SJR, or SCImago Journal Rank, assesses journals by their visibility within the primary discipline they cover, in this case urology. SJR is calculated by Scimago Lab. CiteScore, a metric (standard of measurement) developed by Scopus, ranks journals by the number of citations in a given year to articles that appeared in the previous three years.

Rankings Are Dynamic

The ranking of these nine journals is based on criteria pertinent to 2016 and 2017 metrics. Some metrics are published shortly after the year to which they apply, while others are lagging and might not appear until 18 months or more after the year in question.

With the exception of a journal’s initial year of publication, the other criteria are dynamic and will vary from year to year. We will update the rankings as necessary to give readers a sense of which journals offer the most highly regarded research into erectile dysfunction and related topics.

Journals Foretold of Viagra’s Promise

As an example of the ways in which these journals can offer early alerts to promising new treatments in the development or clinical testing stages, take a look at some of the early articles about sildenafil and ED. Sildenafil, of course, is the active ingredient in Pfizer’s little blue pill known as Viagra.

An article in the June 1996 issue of the “International Journal of Impotence Research” reported on the promising results of a small-scale clinical trial in which sildenafil was used to help impotent study participants to overcome their symptoms of ED. Just two months later, BJU International published an article that reported on the same study with a focus on efforts to assess sildenafil’s efficacy and safety.

Less than two years later, Pfizer formally introduced Viagra to the world as a revolutionary new treatment for erectile dysfunction caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis.
