If you’ve got untreated sleep-related issues, it might be affecting your sex life. That’s because a study presented at the American Urological Association found that sleep disorders are associated with erectile dysfunction (ED).
How strong is the correlation?
The study found that men with ED were twice as likely to have sleep apnea, which is caused by a temporary airway collapse. But other conditions, such as insomnia, restless leg syndrome and heavy snoring can all decrease the quality and quantity of sleep, which has been linked to ED.
In addition, chronic sleep issues have been linked to other conditions that can contribute to impotence, such as diabetes, obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure.
How much sleep do men need?
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises men to get between seven and nine hours of good quality sleep to keep your physical and cognitive health at its peak.
Of course, getting a lot of sleep is easier said than done, especially if you have a new baby, a lot of stress or multiple jobs. But there are some things you can do to maximize your winks.
If you drink coffee or caffeinated soda, cut yourself off by noon. That’s because caffeine can take up to eight hours to wear off.
Buy room-darkening curtains and keep your bedroom quiet and peaceful. Don’t use your bedroom for anything but sex and sleep, or you’ll condition your brain to be thinking about work or bills every time you try to fall asleep.
Exercise earlier in the day to increase your quality of sleep, and avoid drinking alcohol before bed. Although it may help you fall asleep, it can cause restlessness during the night.
Finally, create a soothing bedtime routine to help you unwind and train your brain to know when it’s time for sleep. Reading a book (not on the computer), taking a hot bath and drinking caffeine-free tea can all help.
