Only you can decide whether Stendra or Viagra works better for erectile dysfunction (ED). The drugs belong to the same class, but are formulated slightly differently, and each man’s body reacts differently to them.

What Is Stendra?

Stendra is the newest prescription drug option for men with erection issues. It is now available in the United States, following FDA approval in April 2012.

Stendra is a direct competitor to Viagra, Levitra, Staxyn, and Cialis. These four drugs have been on the market for a decade or longer, though Staxyn, a dissolvable form of Levitra that does not have to be taken with water, has only been available since 2011.

Stendra is expected to be a very popular drug, just like its competitors. You can already find questionable internet sites offering to sell “generic” Stendra. Of course, it is not available as a generic, and you should stay away from any site offering to ship a “generic” of any erection problems medication to the United States. Importing prescription drugs from abroad is illegal except in very specific cases, and you risk losing money, being questioned by Customs, and more importantly, ingesting something harmful.

It’s great to have another FDA-approved option for treating erection problems, and many men are eager to try Stendra. The obvious questions people have about Stendra are, “How is Stendra different?” and “Is Stendra better than Viagra?” The first is the easier of the two to answer.

How Is Stendra Different?

Stendra acts in the same basic way as the other erection problems medications in that it is classed as a PDE 5 inhibitor. However, the active ingredient, Avanafil, is formulated differently from the active ingredients in the other drugs. Viagra’s active ingredient is Sildenafil, and it works by inhibiting a substance known as PDE 5. When PDE 5 is blocked or inhibited, it cannot break down another substance known as cGMP, and cGMP is necessary for increased blood flow to the sexual organs. Less PDE 5 means more cGMP, which means more blood flow to the penis; hence, an erection is easier to achieve.

Researchers believe that Stendra’s action as a PDE 5 inhibitor is more specific than the action of Viagra’s PDE 5 inhibitor. If this is indeed the case, it would be roughly analogous to using a small hammer to drive a small nail into a wall rather than using a sledgehammer. While a sledgehammer will do the job, it may have other effects (like making holes in the drywall). If Stendra is a more targeted PDE 5 inhibitor than Viagra, it could mean that side effects are less severe or bothersome with Stendra. The product is still too new to be able to draw any definitive conclusions, however.

Is Stendra Better than Viagra?

Better is ultimately a personal consideration when it comes to ED meds.

When it comes to pharmaceuticals and their effects on the human body, “better” is a relative term. Here’s what the research says so far.

When a man takes the smallest dose of Viagra (25 mg), he is 1.7 times more likely to have an erection than if he took a placebo. At the 50 mg and 100 mg dosages, he is 2.1 times more likely to have an erection. Overall, 75% of men taking Viagra reported better erections.

With Stendra, 80% of men reported improved erections. When it comes to actual sex, the rate of successful intercourse ranged from 46% to 74% for those who took the recommended starting dosage of 100 mg of Stendra. Additionally, although both Viagra and Stendra are supposed to be taken 30 minutes prior to sex, with Stendra, 66% to 72% of men reported being able to have intercourse within 15 minutes of taking it.

Furthermore, Stendra appears to have a longer-lasting effect, when compared to Viagra. Viagra is considered ineffective after four hours, but 59% to 83% of men taking Stendra were able to function sexually a full six hours after taking it.

Are Side Effects of Stendra Similar to Side Effects of Viagra?

In general, side effects are reported at about the same rates for both Viagra and Stendra. However, the side effect of seeing a faint blue tint over everything after taking Stendra has not been reported, yet 3% of Viagra users reported this side effect. The rare side effect of hearing difficulty after taking Viagra has not been reported by Stendra users, but that may be because Stendra has not been on the market long enough for some of the rarer side effects to show up.

While Stendra is not recommended for men who take nitrates for cardiac conditions, some data indicates that Stendra is less likely to lead to a sharp drop in blood pressure for men who also take nitroglycerine. However, it is very important that men who want to take Stendra tell their physician if they take drugs for cardiac conditions.

Which Should You Choose?

There is no simple answer to whether you should take Stendra or Viagra to treat erection problems. Lifestyles and physiology are varied enough that what works best for one man may not work so well for another. With any of the major erection problems drugs, there can be a certain amount of trial and error involved with finding the best treatment. Some physicians will provide patients with sample drugs to try, because loss of erection drugs can be expensive. In general, if you can take one ED drug safely, you can take the others safely.

When all the data is taken into account, the answer to the question of which drug to take often comes down to personal experience. All the PDE 5 inhibitors are available by prescription only, and some physicians may prefer prescribing one of them over the others. loss of erections are a very individualized condition, with a variety of causes and contributing factors. If you have loss of erections, treatment should start with a consultation with a physician to ensure that PDE 5 inhibitors are safe for you to take. If so, you may have to try more than one to determine which is best for you.

The one thing you should not do is order something claiming to be Stendra from a dodgy website, particularly one located outside the U.S. or one that doesn’t require a prescription. Don’t take chances. The risks to your health are too great.
