Top 11 Questions About Staxyn

In 1998, Viagra revolutionized men’s health. While Viagra is still the most popular erectile dysfunction medication, men now have more options. Many are discovering the benefits of faster-acting Staxyn. Read on for answers to the questions we hear most often about Staxyn (vardenafil ODT) and see if it’s right for you.

How does Staxyn work?

Like all PDE5 inhibitors (the class of drugs that ED meds belong to), Staxyn works by increasing blood flow to the penis. It does this by relaxing the smooth muscle tissue that lines the blood vessels. This causes the vessels to dilate, which allows them to carry an increased volume of blood to the penis to stimulate an erection.

Men who take Staxyn report harder, longer-lasting erections. After sex, the blood flow decreases naturally, and the erection subsides on its own.

How is Staxyn different from other ED meds?

Unlike most other ED meds, Staxyn is orosoluble, meaning it dissolves in the mouth. Staxyn is placed under the tongue and is absorbed quickly. This allows the medication to enter the bloodstream faster than ordinary tablets. When a pill is swallowed, it must be absorbed by the stomach lining, a process that takes longer.

How quickly does Staxyn work?

Staxyn works very quickly, in as little as 15 minutes (though it can take 30 to 60 minutes for some men).

How long does Staxyn last?

Staxyn typically lasts about eight hours, but each individual is different. Your results may be more or less than the eight-hour average. Some users say it works for them for as long as 12 hours, but if you’re new to Staxyn, expect eight for your first time.

Can I get hard more than once with Staxyn?

Yes! Most men find that they are able to have intercourse more than once in a session with a brief refractory period (time to recover and be ready to perform again) in between, which varies from one man to another.

Can I take Staxyn with blood pressure medication?

Many studies, like this one, have found PDE5 inhibitors in general, and Staxyn/vardenafil in particular, to be safe and well-tolerated when used with most blood pressure medications, even for men using multiple antihypertensives.

Can my blood pressure medication be causing my erectile dysfunction?

In most cases, this is unlikely to be the case. Most antihypertensive medications have a neutral or even positive effect on sexual functioning. These include:

  • Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs).
  • Calcium channel blockers.
  • Alpha-blockers.
  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors.

But there are exceptions to this general rule. Beta-blockers and diuretics have been known to cause erection issues. Luckily, there are other options. If you feel your blood pressure medication is affecting your erectile function, talk to your doctor about the possibility of switching to a different BP med.

If you have concerns about taking any medications along with Staxyn, you can find out if there are any known interactions with other meds you’re taking with a drug interaction tool.

I have heart disease. Can I take Staxyn?

It depends. If your doctor has advised that you are not healthy enough for sexual activity because of a recent heart attack or other cardiac condition, follow that advice.

Staxyn is also unsafe for men who have a diagnosis of phenylketonuria. Staxyn contains phenylalanine, an amino acid that men with this condition can’t break down properly.

And it is never safe to take PDE5 inhibitors with nitrates, a group of drugs prescribed for heart conditions.

It is never safe to take Staxyn with nitrates, a group of drugs prescribed for heart conditions (though not usually for blood pressure alone). Nitrates also lower blood pressure, so combining a nitrate with PDE5 inhibitors is dangerous.

Again, if you are in doubt as to whether any medications you are taking are compatible with Staxyn, you can check with a drug interaction tool. However, never make any medication changes without speaking to your doctor first.

I have diabetes. Is Staxyn the best choice for me?

All PDE5 inhibitors have been evaluated for ED in men with diabetes and are safe and effective. However, some men may find that one PDE5 inhibitor may work better than another.

For example, some men with diabetes have found that Viagra doesn’t work well for them but found success with vardenafil (Staxyn or Levitra). This makes the active ingredient in Staxyn a good first choice for men with diabetes.

Can I use Staxyn with recreational drugs?

We don’t recommend it. While a drink or two won’t hurt, anything else will work against you. Here’s why:

Excessive Alcohol

Most guys find that alcohol and erections don’t mix. Staxyn is not likely to change that. More importantly, alcohol lowers blood pressure, so while one or two drinks is probably fine, it can be dangerous to drink more than that with any PDE5 inhibitor onboard.

Study results are mixed on taking PDE5 inhibitors with marijuana. Our best advice is to avoid it. There is anecdotal evidence that cannabis can interfere with testosterone and worsen (or even cause) ED.

Cannabis buds and oil.

Caffeine can interfere with the effects of Staxyn. Whether in the form of coffee or energy drinks like Red Bull, an excess of caffeine can interfere with strong erections.

Again, NEVER, EVER TAKE VIAGRA WITH “POPPERS”! Many guys use “poppers” to enhance their sexual experience. If you’re using Staxyn, don’t do it.

The drug in poppers is butyl nitrite, which is closely related to amyl nitrite, a drug that lowers blood pressure to dangerous levels when taken with any PDE5 inhibitor, including Staxyn.

Poppers and Staxyn is a potentially deadly combination.
