When you think of a life cycle, you probably think of second grade science when you were learning about caterpillars becoming butterflies, but this life cycle is a whole lot different. Researchers believe a man’s penis has a life cycle that changes with time.
Appearance and size and sensitivity change
According to WebMd, there are two major changes in how Mr. Man looks. The head of the penis gradually loses its purplish color, the result of reduced blood flow. “As testosterone wanes, the penis gradually reverts to its prepubertal, mostly hairless, state,” says Irwin Goldstein, MD, director of sexual medicine at Alvarado Hospital in San Diego and editor-in-chief of The Journal of Sexual Medicine.
It doesn’t stop at appearance; the size of the penis also changes. As men age, they put on a few pounds and that can spell trouble.
“In some cases, abdominal fat all but buries the penis,” says Ronald Tamler, MD, PhD, co-director of the Men’s Health Program at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. “One way I motivate my overweight patients is by telling them that they can appear to gain up to an inch in size simply by losing weight.”
As if that weren’t enough, studies show the penis loses sensitivity over the years. This can make it more difficult to get an erection or achieve an orgasm.
Not all doom and gloom
With age comes wisdom. You might not look like you did in your 20s but there is something to be said for experience. Studies show that the penis does change, but sexual satisfaction in older men doesn’t.
