Partner yoga helps couples to prevent or treat various forms of sexual dysfunction, including erection problems.
Partner yoga can help couples to prevent or treat various forms of sexual dysfunction, including erection problems.

The many benefits of yoga have been widely touted. Improved flexibility and strength. Deep relaxation. Relief for chronic pain. Lower blood pressure. And a sense of harmony between mind and body.

Now comes word that yoga — especially partner yoga — leads to better sex and even helps to overcome sexual dysfunction, including erection problems.

Loyola University Health System, located in the Chicago suburb of Maywood, Illinois, in September 2013 launched its Sexual Wellness Clinic. One of the first programs offered at the clinic was a 90-minute partner yoga session.

Benefits of Yoga Session

In a press release announcing its partner yoga program, LUHS said this form of the yoga discipline “uses massage, breathing exercises and mutually beneficial postures couples can do together to build trust, relax and have fun.”

Susan Walsh, a psychologist and certified yoga instructor at Loyola’s Sexual Wellness Clinic, explains that sexual problems often develop as an outgrowth of the distance and resentments that develop in marriages over time. “Partner yoga can clear this negative energy and help a couple reconnect and become comfortable with touch and intimacy.”

But you may be wondering how — if at all — yoga might help you to overcome your erection problems, which you’ve been told by your doctor stem from compromised blood flow to your penis. In fact, good sex for both males and females depends on strong blood flow to the genitals.

Deep Relaxation

High on the list of yoga’s benefits, according to “Psychology Today” writer Michael Castleman, is deep relaxation, which “concentrates blood in the central body where it’s available to the genitals, instead of being directed to the limbs, which happens when people feel stressed (the fight-or-flight reflex).”

Castleman, who has written about sexuality for more than three decades, goes on to explain that “as deep relaxation becomes sexual arousal, the arteries that carry blood into the genitals open (dilate), and extra blood flows into the penis and vaginal wall. In men, this extra blood produces erection, in women, vaginal lubrication and increased clitoral sensitivity.”

Banishes Stress

Relaxation helps rid the body of stress, and stress is one of the factors responsible for erection problems in men as well as sexual dysfunction in women. Castleman cites an Indian research study that assessed the effects of yoga in 50 medical students. After the students began practicing yoga, researchers found that their levels of anxiety and stress declined dramatically.

The deep relaxation that yoga produces can help to direct strong blood flow to the genitals, alleviating the symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

Yoga helps to break the vicious cycle of stress leading to sexual dysfunction that further increases stress levels, according to Marty Klein, Ph.D., a sex therapist in Palo Alto, California. Because yoga reduces anxiety levels, it enhances the sexual experience and helps to prevent and treat sexual problems.

Moderate Exercise Also Helps

If yoga is just not your thing, Castleman points out that anything that improves arterial blood flow improves sexual function, including erectile function. Regular moderate exercise has been shown to help relieve erection difficulties in some as well as prevent them in others, he says.

When it comes to yoga, Castleman isn’t just talking the talk but actually walking the walk. He takes three yoga classes weekly, and his wife is a yoga instructor.

It is widely recognized, says Castleman, that major risk factors for cardiovascular disease — diabetes, elevated cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, and smoking — damage arteries and reduce blood flow to the penis as well as the heart. Studies have shown that regular yoga practice improves arterial blood flow and thus reduces the risk of both cardiovascular disease and erection problems.

Indian Study Cited

As an indicator of yoga’s beneficial effects on arterial blood flow, Castleman points to another Indian research study of 42 men with heart disease. Men in the study group were urged to eat a heart-healthy diet. Some of the study subjects also began practicing yoga on a regular basis.

After 12 months, men in the yoga group had lower cholesterol, fewer angina attacks, and had lost significantly more weight than others in the study who had opted out of yoga practice.

“Because yoga improves the health of the cardiovascular system,” writes Castleman, “it’s no great leap to suppose that it improves sexual function and helps prevent and treat sex problems.”

Improves Orgasm

Yoga’s benefits aren’t limited to improving erectile function, says Castleman. It can also improve orgasm. Orgasm involves rapid contractions in the muscles of the pelvic floor. Regular yoga practice strengthens pelvic floor muscles in much the same way that Kegel exercises do.

For many unhappy couples, the elephant in the room turns out to be some form of sexual dysfunction on the part of one or both partners.

Men who suffer from premature ejaculation, the most common form of male sexual dysfunction, can benefit from yoga as well, writes Castleman. He cites yet another Indian research study in which men with PE were offered a choice between a one-hour yoga workout daily or drug treatment. At the conclusion of the study, men in the yoga group demonstrated significantly improved ejaculatory control.

Medications Available

While yoga clearly has a role in improving male sexual function, it may not be the answer for all men who suffer from erection problems. Fortunately, there are medications that can help restore erectile function in men who’ve lost their ability to get and keep an erection strong enough for intercourse.

It all started with Viagra, the so-called little blue pill that was introduced in 1998, Today, pharmacy shelves — both physical and virtual — stock a variety of impotence medications, all of which belong to same family of drugs.

PDE5 Inhibitors

These are known as PDE5 inhibitors, so-called because they temporarily block the effects of an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase-5, which can interfere with the strong blood flow to the penis that is essential for an erection.

In addition to Viagra (sildenafil citrate), the PDE5 inhibitors include Cialis (tadalafil), Levitra and Staxyn (vardenafil), and Stendra (avanafil). Although they all work in much the same way, there are slight differences in their chemical structure. Studies have shown that these drugs are generally safe and effective in healthy men.

Not Compatible with Nitrates

Because the PDE5 inhibitors temporarily lower blood pressure, they should never be taken at the same time as other nitrate-based drugs, because together they could cause a life-threatening drop in blood pressure.

For men who would like to order one of these PDE5 inhibitors from the privacy of their homes, eDrugstore.com is a reliable supplier of these and other medications. In business since 1998, eDrugstore is a member of the Secure Medical network of online drugstores and is based in Tempe, Arizona. It sells only FDA-approved drugs that are sourced solely from U.S. licensed pharmacies.

To purchase any of the PDE5 inhibitors, you’ll need a prescription. If you already have one from your personal physician, you can fax or scan and email it along with your order to eDrugstore. Alternatively, eDrugstore can arrange an online consultation with one of its contract physicians at no additional cost to you.
