A Colombian man had to undergo surgery after overdosing on Viagra. Some reports, including one from NY Daily News, say the man’s penis had to be amputated. Other reports, including one from the Huffington Post, says the man required surgery to relieve the pressure built up in his genitals, but everything remains in place.

Taking too much

Gentil Ramirez, of Gigante, Columbia, told doctors he wanted to impress his wife and took “a lot of Viagra.” He had an erection for several days before going to the doctor’s office.

His penis was inflamed, fractured and infected with gangrene. Doctors feared the gangrene would spread, so surgery was required.

The 66-year-old man is now recovering from surgery, but doctor’s say his situation underscores the importance of following proper dosage instructions.

Take medications as instructed

Viagra, and other medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, are prescribed in various dosages. A licensed physician will decide the amount that’s right for you, ranging from 25 mg to 100 mg.

Viagra is taken one hour before intercourse and usually takes effect within 30 minutes.

Should you experience any kind of side effects, including an erection that lasts longer than four hours, you should seek medical care immediately. While it may be an embarrassing problem, serious side effects can occur if action isn’t taken.

If you suffer from any of the following medication conditions, you should not take Viagra:

  • Viagra can be purchased online through eDrugstore.com.
    Viagra can be purchased online through eDrugstore.com.

    heart disease or heart rhythm problems, coronary artery disease

  • high or low blood pressure
  • liver or kidney disease
  • a blood cell disorder such as sickle cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia;
  • a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia;
  • a stomach ulcer;
  • retinitis pigmentosa (an eye condition)
  • a physical deformity of the penis (such as Peyronie’s disease)
