Healthy sexual relationship
A happy, healthy sexual relationship benefits many aspects of physical and mental health.
A healthy sexual relationship impacts just about every area of life, from the practical (the biological imperative to reproduce) to cognitive performance to self-image.

And this is the case regardless of age, with even elderly people enjoying the benefits of a healthy sex life. One study published in the Journal of Management found that employees who reported a healthy sex life at home were more engaged with work and more satisfied with their jobs.

A healthy sexual relationship obviously benefits marriage, with happy partners reporting a positive “afterglow” of sexual activity that is associated with greater long-term satisfaction with their relationship. Many other benefits of regular, healthy sexual activity have been reported, including:

  • A stronger immune system
  • Better heart health
  • Natural pain relief
  • Lower risk of prostate cancer
  • Better sleep
  • Lower stress levels
  • Better cognitive performance
  • Higher self-esteem

And now, a study has reported that regular sex may slow down the aging process and even lead to a longer life. To understand why, it’s important to know what telomeres are.

What Are Telomeres and Why Do They Matter?

Telomeres can be thought of as similar to the plastic tips on the ends of shoelaces. Just as the tips on your shoelaces help keep them from fraying and wearing out prematurely, telomeres, which are protective “caps” on the ends of chromosomes, protect our genetic information from becoming “frayed” or altered as cells go about the business of dividing.

A healthy human body requires cells to divide periodically to create new cells to replace older, worn cells, and telomeres prevent genetic information from becoming scrambled during cell division. Your cells still divide and do what they’re supposed to even when the telomeres are damaged, just as it’s still possible (though often difficult) to lace your shoes with laces where the tips have worn off. But just as it’s easier to lace shoes with new shoelaces with nice, sturdy tips, cell division goes better when telomeres are healthy and intact.

One of the important changes our bodies undergo as we get older is that telomeres tend to get smaller and less protective. And that means that more can go wrong during the cellular division process, leading to common symptoms of aging like lower stamina and increased risk for serious illness.

A “Chicken or Egg” Question

A new study published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology found that regular sexual activity is actually associated with longer, more functional telomeres. Study highlights included two important conclusions:

  • Healthy sexual relationships benefit both physical and mental health
  • Sexual intimacy is associated with longer telomeres in blood cells

With preliminary scientific studies such as this one, it’s important not to equate correlation with causation. In other words, just because people who had regular sex had healthier telomeres doesn’t mean that it was the sex that caused the telomeres to be healthier. And the direction of the correlation or causation can’t be inferred either. In this study, for example, it’s possible that the healthiest study participants happened to be the ones who had the most regular sex rather than the other way around.

Nevertheless, the findings are encouraging, and certainly raise the possibility that a healthy sex life is associated with a healthier life in general as we get older.

One Theory on How Regular Sexual Activity Combats Aging

If it turns out that sexual activity does lead to healthier telomeres, researchers suspect that may be because sexual intimacy reduces the effects of stress. Regular sexual intimacy may calm the body’s stress response systems while making the immune system stronger. Over time, it is possible that this pattern results in telomeres that increase in healthiness, possibly making the effects of aging less apparent.

Though the exact mechanisms haven’t been identified, the human body appears to be very much a “use it or lose it” machine. For example, working longer helps keep the brain and the social drive healthy, and this is true not only for well-educated and healthy people, but for people in general. Regular learning and calling upon learned material (rather than depending on Google) also appears to help us recall and maintain information.

Sex, too, may be a “use it or lose it” function, but that doesn’t mean you can’t revive a dormant sex life. The human body responds positively to positive lifestyle changes, so it’s important that people not fall into the trap of thinking they’re somehow too old for sexual intimacy.

Male Impotence Does Not Have to Be a Part of Getting Older

Just as the female body goes through changes with menopause, the male sexual system changes with age too. But that doesn’t mean that male impotence is an unavoidable part of getting older. Many of the medical conditions that become increasingly prevalent with age (like diabetes and heart disease) make men more likely to experience erection problems. But “more likely” doesn’t mean it’s hopeless.

Male impotence doesn’t necessarily mean the end of sexual intimacy, and in many if not most cases it can be treated successfully. Erection problems aren’t usually psychological in origin (though psychological factors can certainly affect men, in terms of the self-fulfilling cycle of performance anxiety). Usually, erection problems have to do with circulation, and there are several ways to improve circulation, both in general and to the sex organs. The results can be easier sexual intimacy and all the benefits that go along with it.

Medications to Treat Male Impotence

Before Viagra, Cialis, and other drugs that treat male impotence, many men simply suffered quietly, or accepted that their sexual options were limited. Some men were told that their sexual problems were the result of neuroses or other psychological issues. Now we know better. The medications that are commonly prescribed to treat erection problems work by improving blood flow to the penis, which is at the root of many problems with erectile dysfunction. It still may not be easy for men to bring up the topic of erection problems with their doctor, but the topic is much less of a taboo subject than it used to be.

Lifestyle Changes That Support Better Sex

Healthy sexual relationship
Regular sex may actually help protect chromosomes from damage during cell division.

Even better news is that there are many lifestyle changes that can have a positive impact on male sexual function.

Those changes that your doctor recommends for good health, such as getting regular exercise, eating more fiber, reducing fat and sugar in the diet, cutting back on alcohol consumption, and quitting smoking, aren’t just good for your heart.

They’re good for your sex life as well. Any lifestyle changes that contributes to your having cleaner, healthier blood vessels that aren’t clogged with cholesterol or constricted by cigarette smoke benefit every part of the body, including the sexual response system.

Regular sex isn’t just good for the ego. More scientific information is accumulating that it is also good for the body, helping slow the aging process. It may even be involved in improving the quality of the telomeres that help keep chromosomes healthy.

Don’t despair if you have problems with male impotence, because effective treatments are available. These treatments, along with other healthy lifestyle choices, help men of every age enjoy sex and life as a whole more.
