An Italian research study finds that increased exposure to light appears to fire up the libido in men who have lost their desire for sex. The ebb and flow of sexual desire is likened to seasonal affective disorder.

If you’ve lost your sex drive, you may want to consider investing in an artificial light similar to those used in the light box therapy treatment of seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.

Researchers at the University of Siena in Italy decided to study the affects of artificial light on libido because they knew that sexual desire and activity tends to increase during spring and summer. Their hypothesis was that ebb and flow of sexual desire had to do with exposure to light.

The team recruited 38 men who had little desire for sex and divided them into two groups. For two weeks, one group was exposed to 30 minutes of a special light box with lots of artificial light, while the second group got a box with much less light.

Both groups provided assessments about their interest in sex before and after the artificial light experiment. They also had their testosterone levels measured.

The Results

The men with the stronger light showed significant increases in sexual desire and satisfaction — from a 2 out of 10 to a 6.3 out of 10. This represented a more than threefold increase. The control group went from a 2 to a 2.7.

In addition, the group with the stronger light saw an increase in testosterone levels — from 2.3 nanograms per milliliter to 3.6 nanograms per milliliter.

Why would artificial light help sexual satisfaction?

The team has two theories:

  1. It may block activity in the pineal gland, thus increasing testosterone production.
  2. It may increase blood levels of luteinizing hormone, which also boosts testosterone levels.

Possible Causes

Low sex drive can share causes with erectile dysfunction. For example, both can be caused by depression, stress, and anxiety.

For men with ED, simply taking Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis can be enough to fix their impotence and get them back to developing and maintaining an erection. However, for men with a low sex drive, low levels of testosterone are often a contributing factor. Some men with low sex drive do very well with testosterone replacement therapy.
