Recent research indicated that maritime pine bark extract can help to improve erectile function in impotent men. However, readily available prescription drugs such as Viagra, Cialis, or their generic equivalents have been proven more beneficial.
The bark of the maritime pine trees native to the Mediterranean Basin is used to make a dietary supplement known as Pycnogenol, which is used to treat a wide array of conditions, including diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.
Pycnogenol, the U.S.-trademarked name for maritime pine bark extract, is rich in a class of polyphenols known as proanthocyanidins, which are said to act as antioxidants and to protect the heart and cardiovascular system.
Good for Heart = Good for Penis
As regular readers of this blog are aware, what’s good for the heart is usually good for the penis, and vice versa. Both of these organs are dependent on robust blood flow to function at optimal levels. Thus, anything that improves blood flow to the heart is almost certain to do the same to the penis. And strong blood flow is essential to achieve and maintain an erection.
A study published in the December 2019 issue of Slovakia’s Bratislava Medical Journal found that erectile dysfunction patients treated with Pycnogenol not only experienced improved erectile function but also lower blood levels of lipids.
Diabetics and Nondiabetics Included
The research team behind the study recruited 53 patients with ED. Of those 53, 32 also suffered from diabetes; the remaining 21 study participants did not. All patients were randomly divided into two groups. The first group was treated daily with Pycnogenol over the course of three months, while the second group was given a placebo.
At the end of the three-month study period, all study participants were asked to evaluate their post-study erectile function by filling out the self-administered International Index of Erectile Function questionnaire. They were also subjected to laboratory testing of blood levels of both lipids and glucose.
Diabetics Showed Biggest Gains
Based on these post-study tests, diabetic men who were treated with Pycnogenol showed a 45 percent improvement in erectile function, compared with a 22 percent gain among nondiabetics. Lipid levels were down 20 percent in diabetics and 21 percent in nondiabetics. Among diabetics, glucose levels were reduced by 22 percent.
In an earlier study, reported by AminoAcidStudies.org, Bulgarian researchers found that impotent men treated with both pine bark extract and L-arginine, an amino acid, showed significant improvements in erectile function.
Viagra’s Results More Impressive
While Pycnogenol and L-arginine have produced improved erectile function in impotent men, those improvements are not as significant as those produced by Viagra and the other oral ED drugs known collectively as PDE5 inhibitors.
These prescription drugs, which now include three lower-cost generic equivalents, are readily available and have been proven safe and effective in closely monitored clinical trials.
