Levitra is an FDA-approved medication prescribed by doctors to men suffering from erectile dysfunction. As a member of a drug class called PDE5 inhibitors, Levitra helps men achieve erections by increasing blood flow and relaxing muscles to facilite blood flow to and within the penis. Unless penile chambers called cavernosa chambers are sufficiently engorged with blood, the penis may fail to sustain an erection.

Specifically, Levitra contains a drug called a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor that prevents blood vessels supplying blood to penile chambers from restricting blood flow necessary for an erection to occur.  However, just taking a Levitra pill does not automatically cause an erection. Instead, men need to take Levitra one hour before engaging in sexually stimulating activity to achieve an erection.

Safety Information about Levitra

Levitra, like Viagra and Cialis, is a PDE5 inhibitor that has helped millions of men overcome erectile dysfunction. While Levitra may work well for some men, others may not be able to take it if they suffer from certain medical conditions. For example,

  • Men who take nitrates to alleviate angina (chest pain) cannot take Levitra because it increases the risk of suffering a sudden drop in blood pressure.
  • Men diagnosed with heart disease or who have suffered a heart attack or seizure may be advised by their doctor not to take Levitra.
  • Men with stomach ulcers, liver or kidney disease may not be able to use Levitra.
  • Levitra may react negatively to other medications, including over-the-counter medications, herbal supplements or megavitamin supplements. Always inform you physician of all medication you are taking before starting on Levitra.

Is Levitra Better Than Cialis or Viagra?

According to WebMD, Levitra is longer lasting than Viagra, with Levitra maintaining an erection for five hours and Viagra capable of sustaining an erection for four hours.  However, Cialis seems to work faster for some men–15 minutes compared to Levitra’s 45 minutes to one hour)–and may last as long as six hours.  Determining whether Levitra is right for you essentially depends on your health, if you experience side effects and what kind of results you want from an erectile dysfunction medication.
