The average price of Levitra increased 4.1 percent from January to February 2020 but is still well below mid-2019 levels. However, the price of vardenafil, Levitra’s generic equivalent, inched lower in February.
The average price of Levitra showed some surprising strength in February 2020, climbing 4.1 percent from $54.29 in January to $56.52 per 20 mg tablet, according to Secure Medical’s prescription drug price review. However, Levitra’s February price was still significantly lower than its $62.98 price in July 2019, only eight months earlier.
By contrast, the price for Levitra’s generic equivalent, vardenafil hydrochloride, moved slightly lower in February 2020, falling 1.9 percent from $21.59 to $21.18 per 20 mg tablet. As with its brand-name counterpart, vardenafil’s price in February 2020 was lower than it had been in mid-2019. Its February price was 56.7 percent lower than its July 2019 level of $48.88.
Price Rise Is Surprising
However small, Levitra’s price increase in February is a bit surprising when one considers that the erectile dysfunction drug is the least popular of the Big Three ED medications. Those include Viagra and Cialis, as well as Levitra.
A report at CNBC.com in May 2019 cited data from GoodRx.com showing that Levitra and vardenafil accounted for a modest 5 percent of all the Big Three ED prescriptions filled between December 1, 2018, and January 31, 2019.
Viagra, Sildenafil Most Popular
That compared with a 65 percent market share for Viagra/sildenafil, by far the most popular ED medications as of early 2019, and 30 percent for Cialis/tadalafil.
The second of the so-called PDE5 inhibitors to hit the market, Levitra won approval from the Food and Drug Administration in August 2003, more than five years after the introduction of Viagra.
Levitra Dosing Recommendations
Available in tablets of 10 and 20 mg, Levitra’s recommended starting dose is 10 mg. Their effects last from four to five hours on average, Levitra/vardenafil being slightly longer lasting than Viagra/sildenafil.
Cialis, Tadalafil Stand Apart
Levitra and Viagra’s Big Three competitors, Cialis and tadalafil, are different in many respects. To begin with, low-strength Cialis/tadalafil (2.5 to 5 mg) can be taken daily to ensure that you are able to get and keep an erection whenever the moment is right. Its higher-strength counterpart (10 to 20 mg) is designed to be taken on an as-needed basis, usually 60 to 120 minutes before sexual activity. The effects of this higher-strength Cialis/tadalafil can last for up to 36 hours.
