Horny goat weed or epimedium has long been a favorite ED remedy among folk medicine practitioners. Now research reveals that it may well play a key role in the fight against erectile dysfunction by protecting good cholesterol.
Throughout the ages and long before the dawn of modern medicine, horny goat weed has been among the most popular and enduring of the many herbal remedies used to fight erectile dysfunction. Scientifically known as epimedium, horny goat weed grows throughout most of China, other parts of Asia, and in the Mediterranean basin.

Two researchers from South Korea’s Duksung Women’s University found that horny goat weed helped to prevent the oxidation of HDL, thus preserving its effectiveness as a weapon against LDL.
Further Study Needed
In the conclusion to their study, the researchers suggest that horny goat weed in supplement form could help in the fight against ED. However, they acknowledge that further study is needed to replicate and confirm their preliminary findings.
The South Korean study is not the first to find some value in the use of horny goat weed as a treatment for ED. According to WebMD.com, a 2008 study found that the herb also inhibits the effects of the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, which interferes with optimal blood flow to the penis. This is the same mechanism used by Viagra and the other oral ED medications known collectively as PDE5 inhibitors.
