Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Erectile Dysfunction, Sex, Once Daily CialisMany men of all ages struggle with Erectile Dysfunction, and the percentage of men affected dramatically increases as they get older.  ED medications work differently with the body chemistry of different men, so it is good to know there are a variety of medications available.  As of September 1, there may be a new product on the market that is expected to give the old champion Viagra a “run for the money.”

On September 1, 2011 the FDA approved Avanafil, a new trial medication for the treatment of ED.  Tests have been conducted with this medication over the past two years, with very promising results.  You won’t find it in your pharmacy quite yet though.  Sales to the public are on hold until a final review by the FDA is conducted.  This is expected to be complete on April 29, 2012.

Vivus Inc, the makers of Avanafil, boast that it has a more rapid onset of than any of itsViagra, Cialis, Levitra, Once Daily Cialis, Erectile Dysfunction competitors, namely Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra.  The reported onset of 30 minutes may not be as monumental as expected though, since Cialis already reports a 30 minute onset, and Once Daily Cialis has been reported at even less time.  Avanafil has also reported reduced side effects in comparison with the currently approved ED medications.  Some of the side effects in late phase trials where low but consisted of headache, skin flushing, and nasal congestion, but no visual imparities like that seen in sildenafil.

Avanafil is a new chemistry, but works in a very similar manner to the other ED treatments on the market.  Avanafil is a PDE% (phosphodiesterase type 5) inhibitor.  It works by blocking a protein in the body that prevents erection, thus allowing the blood vessels to expand.  This way blood can flow into the penis as normal during sexual excitement, and the erection can be maintained.

Avanafil is also being investigated for other medical uses such as improved female sexual function, urinary tract problems, hypertension, stroke prevention, blood clots, and even Alzheimers disease.

Vivus Inc, may have a tougher bunch of competition than expected however, since generic Viagra was expected to enter the market around the same time next year but was pushed back until 2019. A new ED drug is also set to be released in late 2012 or early 2013 that has people asking,”What is Stendra?”  With so many options for people to choose from, it still may be difficult to compete against the much loved little blue pill.
