The History of Cialis
The History of Cialis

One in ten men are thought to suffer from erectile dysfunction. For years, men have turned to Cialis, an oral medication used to treat ED, in order to sustain a healthy and satisfying sex life.

But, how did Cialis become so popular?

The answer is in the drug’s history. On November 21, 2003 Cialis obtained FDA approval ending a 5-year monopoly that Pfizer’s Viagra had on the erectile dysfunction market.

Here’s a look at the steps that led up to the release of Cialis as an ED medication:

Patent pending

In 1993, Icos, who manufactures Cialis studied a PDE5 enzyme inhibiter called IC351, realized the drug could treat impotence.

Icos received its first patent for IC351 in 1994 and clinical trials began in 1995. Two years later, Icos filed a new application with the FDA under the name Cialis.

In 1998, Icos merged with Eli Lilly and Co. and began to work on making Cialis mainstream for men suffering with ED.

Final testing concluded in 2002. Results showed Cialis stayed in a man’s bloodstream for up to 36 hours. That same year, Europe approved Cialis as a prescription drug.

On November 21, 2003, Cialis became available in the United States, after gaining FDA approval.

Present day findings

Today, Cialis isn’t just used to treat erectile dysfunction; it’s also approved to treat BPH. BPH is a condition that causes an enlarged prostate in older men, which often leads to difficulty urinating.

Studies have also linked tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, with potential cancer fighting properties, with specific promise dealing with mouth and throat cancers.

While Cialis can treat other conditions, it’s mainly prescribed to treat ED.
