A medication used to treat erectile dysfucntion may help men suffering with a prostate problem.  Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common problem for men that is not often talked about.  In its simplest form BPH is the enlargement of the prostate.  According to the Austin Urology Institute, this condition will affect approximately 50 percent of men between the ages of 51 and 60 and up to 90 percent of men over the age of 80.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can cause several uncomfortable conditions for men in the bathroom, including trouble urinating and a burning sensation while going to the bathroom.  Researchers are testing Cialis to treat the problems associated with the condition.

Researchers, led by Claus G. Roehrborn, MD, with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, studied 1,058 men from 10 countries. All of the men reported urinary symptoms from BPH for at least six months, whether or not they had a history of erectile dysfunction.  The men were split into five groups and given various doses of Cialis over the course of 12 weeks.  A majority of patients said their symptoms improved while taking Cialis.

The study was published in the Journal of Urology.

About Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia

Doctors aren’t sure what causes BPH, but it may be connected to the changing levels of sex hormones in men as they age.  According to the Mayo Clinic website, the prostate gland is the male organ that produces most of the fluid in semen and transports sperm.  The urethra also runs through the prostate, so if it becomes enlarged the ability to pass urine through the urethra becomes difficult.  The condition is often treated by medication, but surgery is sometimes suggested.  There are several lifestyle changes that can help control the symptoms as well.  According to the Mayo Clinic men can try drinking less at night, limiting alcoholic beverages, scheduling bathroom visits, and staying active to keep their symptoms at bay.
