Unless you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, you probably recognize Cialis as the impotence drug that sets in motion a series of events culminating in an attractive and satisfied-looking couple relaxing in side-by-side bathtubs.
Thanks in part to its memorable advertising campaign as well as a high level of customer satisfaction, Cialis increased its share of the worldwide market for ED drugs to 42 percent during the first half of 2013. According to Eli Lilly & Co., the drug’s worldwide sales totaled $1.04 billion in the first six months of 2013, an increase of 12 percent over the same period in 2012.
Cialis Now Top Seller
With this sharp jump in sales, Cialis surpassed Viagra as the best-selling impotence drug worldwide, at least during the first half of 2013.
Here’s the good news for men who are suffering the frustration and anguish of erection dysfunction: Genuine, brand-name Cialis for Daily Use is available from eDrugstore.com for $8.97 a dose or $269 for a 30-day supply. Two Formulations

PDE5 Inhibitors
Both formulations of Cialis are members of the same family of drugs as Viagra, Levitra, and Stendra. Tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, is known as a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, or PDE5 inhibitor. All the drugs in this family work by temporarily blocking the effects of the PDE5 enzyme. This allows the walls of the blood vessels supplying the penis and other organs to relax and thus promote the strong blood flow necessary to achieve an erection.
If you are suffering from ED of physical origin — the most widespread cause of impotence — you are a prime candidate for cardiovascular problems, if in fact you’ve not already experienced them. The compromised blood supply that is the root cause of most impotence also endangers the heart, which depends on strong blood supply to function normally.
Good for Heart and Penis
Or in the words of John Mulhall, M.D.: “From an erection standpoint, anything that’s good for your heart is good for your penis.” Mulhall is director of the Sexual Medicine Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital and also an associate professor of urology at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College.
Mulhall’s words of wisdom mean that quitting smoking, cutting back on alcohol intake, and eating a healthy diet can help to minimize — if not reverse — your symptoms of ED. In the meantime, you can get the help you need from Cialis or one of the other impotence drugs.
Long-Lasting Formulation

According to Michael Castleman, AARP’s columnist on matters of sex and intimacy, this longer-lasting property is a key factor in the drug’s high level of user satisfaction.
Castleman cites 12 studies in which men who had tried both Cialis and Viagra overwhelmingly chose Cialis as their drug of choice. Among the 8,300 men who participated in the 12 studies, Cialis was favored by an average margin of 3 to 1, according to Castleman.
Women Favor It Too
In four of the studies Castleman reviewed, couples used both drugs and were then asked to choose the one they preferred. It turns out that women liked it better when their sex partners used Cialis.
In Castleman’s view, longer-lasting Cialis has a clear advantage among dating couples and lovers who value sexual spontaneity. While rival drugs generally last four or so hours, Cialis for Use as Needed is good for 36 hours, meaning that a man who takes the drug on Friday evening can depend on erection assistance through at least part of Sunday.
PDE5 Inhibitors Much Alike
Apart from their duration of action, most impotence drugs work very much alike, says Castleman. Most take effect within an hour, and all work equally well whether taken after eating or on an empty stomach.
Whether you take Cialis or another PDE5-inhibiting drug, you’ll still need some sort of mental or physical stimulation to put you in the mood for love, thus eliminating any fear of an embarrassing spontaneous erection.
Side effects from PDE5 inhibitors are also very much alike, according to Castleman. Roughly 16 percent of users experience headaches, 7 percent report upset stomach, and 4 percent experience nasal congestion.
Four-Hour Erections?
The Cialis commercial famously urges users who experience erections lasting four or more hours to contact their doctors. No statistics are offered on the percentage of users experiencing this phenomenon, although we would tend to think those men who do experience such a protracted erection are probably more likely to contact the local newspaper than their doctor.
Cialis and the other PDE5 inhibitors are generally well tolerated, but they are not for everyone. Most importantly, these drugs should never be taken concurrently with nitrates, because together they might trigger life-threatening low levels of blood pressure.
Not for Angina Patients
Patients with angina are also urged to avoid the use of PDE5 inhibitors, because the intense sexual activity that the drugs enable can bring on episodes of angina.
In the wake of its strong sales showing in 2013, Cialis appears to be getting off to a similarly strong start in 2014. Eli Lilly & Co. reported that the drug’s sales worldwide totaled $532.4 million in the first quarter of 2014, up 3 percent from its sales in the same period of 2013. While first-quarter Cialis sales in the United States were down 4 percent at $205.3 million, its sales outside the United States soared 9 percent to $327.1 million.
