Although research has indicated that there are some advantages to robotic surgery for prostate operations, such as lower blood loss and shorter hospital stays, a new study from the UK has found that men who have their prostate removed with robotic surgery are just as likely to get erectile dysfunction as men who get non-robotic surgery.

The British Journal of Cancer also found that robotic surgery didn’t influence the quality of life for men who had it.

The moral of the story

For men who need prostate surgery, this is useful information. It suggests that they should weigh all types of surgeries based on other factors if they’re worried about erectile dysfunction.

“The expertise and skill of an individual surgeon, comparative performance of a surgical center should drive treatment decisions,” says the study’s lead author, Dr. Julie Nossiter of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

According to an article in Deccan Chronicle, although erectile dysfunction was slightly lower in men who had robotic surgery compared to other types of surgery on the prostate, it isn’t enough to make a clinical difference.

It’s also important to point out that not all men with prostate cancer will need surgery. In some cases, doctors may recommend that men without symptoms or those without fast-growing tumors take a “wait and see”” approach, making determinations after each regular screening to assess the need for an intervention.

Treating erectile dysfunction

For men who do undergo prostate cancer treatment of any kind and subsequently experience erectile dysfunction, the erectile dysfunction drug Cialis can be helpful.

Cialis is an FDA-approved drug that’s available from your doctor via a prescription. Don’t try to avoid talking to your doctor about your erectile dysfunction because you’re too embarrassed. Cialis has helped many men with erectile dysfunction and it’s safe for most men.

Be sure to talk to your doctor about any health conditions and current medications, including legal and illegal drugs, as well as nutritional supplements, as some can interfere with Cialis or even have dangerous consequences.
