Can Italian Food Cure Erectile Dysfunction?
An Italian professor might make men with erectile dysfunction think they’ve found the tastiest treatment ever: Italian food.

Defining Italian

When most people think of Italian food they conjure images of lasagna, spaghetti and fettuccini alfredo. But when Italian Society of Andrology President Giorgio Franco says that a “strict Italian diet” is highly effective at curing erectile dysfunction, he’s talking about Mediterranean diets.

Obesity in Italy vs. the U.S.

It makes sense. Mediterranean diets are renown for reducing obesity and promoting vascular health, both of which are helpful in reducing erectile dysfunction.

He may be onto something. An article on rt.com says that Italians have one of the lowest rates of erectile dysfunction in the world. Likewise, statistics published on oecd.org report that 38.2% of the adult population (over age 15) of the United States is obese, compared to just 9.8% in Italy.

The Mediterranean menu

A Mediterranean diet puts a focus on eating plant-based foods and limiting red meat to only a few times per month. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes play a big role in Mediterranean menus, and chefs and home cooks alike focus on herbs and spices more than salt, and olive and canola oils more than butters. These good foods are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which help keep cholesterol numbers down.

When diet isn’t enough

Of course, no one expects that suddenly switching over to a dinner of beans and arugula is going to cure their erectile dysfunction. But a long-term approach to healthy eating can make a big impact for most men.

For those that don’t see significant improvement in the erectile function after sticking to a Mediterranean diet, a prescription for one of the top erectile dysfunction drugs—Viagra, Levitra or Cialis—might do the trick.

Remember, if one erectile drug doesn’t work for you, try another one. They all work a bit differently and some men have lackluster results with one but great results with another.
