A Brazilian spider and Viagra: What do they have in common?

What does a dangerous, fury spider have in common with the sexual enhancer Viagra?  It may seem like a stretch but a Brazilian spider and the ‘love drug’ do share one common similarity.

Researchers at the Medical College of Georgia say the venom in this eight-legged fury creature has the potential of creating an erection that can last for four hours.  Of course, that same venom can also lead to partial paralysis, breathing problems, and even death.

Needless to say the venom itself won’t be hitting the market anytime soon as a way to spice up your sex life, but scientists believe they can extract the chemicals from the venom that cause an erection.  They’re hoping to single out the genes that can stimulate an erection and not the other unwanted side effects.

The spider, sometimes called a banana spider found in Central and South America, is part of an ongoing study at Georgia Health Sciences University.  So far the medical team at the school has only tested the venom in rats, but students also analyzed data from several people who had been accidentally bitten by the spider.  According to their small study, those patients suddenly enjoyed their sex life more after being bit.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, it’s the most venomous spider in the world.  Researchers want to see if their continued efforts can one day help men with erectile dysfunction, much like the hot seller Viagra.

Until that day comes, which researchers acknowledge is years if not decades away, Viagra remains the top selling erectile dysfunction drug in the world.  Since the pill hit the shelves a decade ago it’s estimated 35 million men in 120 countries have taken the drug.  In fact an average of six Viagra pills are taken every second.
