1. Would you say that depression and anxiety have become more common occurrences in the past decade or two? If so, what might be the reason behind the increase?
I think people are more comfortable with assigning a label to their pain than they were in the past, which may have lead to depression and anxiety becoming more common. But there is something to be said for people having a low tolerance for the normal ups and downs that come with just being alive. We are not meant to be 100% blissfully happy or totally level emotionally with no highs and lows- we’re not robots or Stepford Wives!
2. What are the most common “triggers” for depression and/or anxiety? Can these be avoided or prevented?
My style of therapy is called Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, which is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. With this framework, triggers to anxiety and depression are our own irrational, distorted thoughts about an event, adversity or situation. Following these thoughts then lead to unhealthy negative emotions like depression and anxiety.
3. Once someone has identified that they need help for anxiety, depression
or anger issues, what should be their first few steps toward healing?
Find a therapist who is going to use evidence-based therapy to help you get better, not waste time talking about why you became depressed or anxious. No one can really tell you why, only help you figure out what to do about it!
4. Are more people turning to Career Counseling given the state of the economy? What are some benefits of Career Counseling?
In these difficult economic times, career is on everyone’s mind- either finding a new one, or making sure they are cultivating the one they already have. As professional career counselors, we will help guide you throughout this often daunting process. We lead educational group workshops focused on improving time management skills, alleviating stress, mock-interviewing, resume writing, networking and maintaining self-confidence.
- Career counseling can be done over the phone or face to face. Coaching produces long lasting results and is not a quick fix.
- Our goal is to guide and give you the tools to become your own career coach, resume writer, top notch networker and motivational speaker!
- As mental health counselors, we believe it’s necessary to view the client as a whole, and figure out what is keeping you from moving forward.
5. If a person feels lost in any area of their life (career, relationship, sense of self, etc), what should they do?
Feeling lost or stuck doesn’t mean you are crazy, and gone are the days where therapy is for “crazy people”. Sometimes talking to someone outside of your friends and family, someone who is NOT going to give you advice is the way to go! Therapy isn’t about archaic and outdated psychoanalysis of your childhood and unconscious desires. Modern therapy can be affordable and helpful for any number of situations life may throw at you.
About: MyTherapist.info & DrDemarco.tumblr.com
Michael DeMarco has been in private practice as a psychotherapist since 2002. In 2009, he reformed his private practice as a group practice in order to offer more jobs and internship sites in New York to therapists-in-training who must have supervised experience to become licensed mental health counselors or licensed marriage and family therapists. DeMarco’s practice model has been to offer an extremely generous sliding scale to increase access to mental health services to anyone, regardless of insurance benefits.
As project-leader, and future executive director of this non-profit, DeMarco hopes to engage not only mental health clinicians in making mental health a right instead of a privilege, he hopes to engage younger activists and professionals earlier in their careers to become involved in the entire process of forming and running a not-for-profit agency. The agency itself will function out of four locations. The New York offices, currently located at Union Square and in Bushwick, will continue to offer mental health services including individual, couples and group therapy on a sliding scale
