Spring is right around the corner, and that means cook-outs. While everyone loves to spend time with their family and friends eating delicious foods, these social gatherings can prove problematic for those on a diet. All of that high fat food can be very tempting, but by following these tips, you can make it out with your diet intact.
One plate is plenty: No matter how tempting it may be, don’t go back for seconds! Throw in the towel after one plate.
Take your time: Eat slowly. It takes your body about 20 minutes to realize that you’re full, so eating slower will ensure you won’t overeat.
Avoid the snacks: Cookies and sweets are plentiful at any good cook-out, so make sure you steer clear of them. One or two isn’t too bad, but don’t over do it!
Hold the bread: If there is a bread basket, avoid it. Breads, especially those of the non-whole grain variety, can help to drive up weight gain.
Bring your own food: Sure, you could just bring your own meal from home, but that would be rude. Instead, bring a healthy alternative to contribute to the festivities.
Opt for wine: Beer is normally plentiful at cook-outs. But a single can of beer can be over 200 calories, which is no good. Instead, stick with white wine, which has about 65 calories per glass.
Don’t go on an empty stomach: If you show up hungry, you’re going to break your diet. Instead, eat a small snack or meal before leaving for the cook-out. This way you’ll show up with enough food in your belly, ensuring you won’t overeat.
