In the past decade the number of severely obese people has skyrocketed. According to a new study the number of people who are more than 100 pounds overweight has jumped by 70% in the last decade.
Disturbing trend, but there is a bright spot
The findings are a result of analysts pouring through stats from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While the results are starting to some, researchers say there is some good news.
“The proportion of people at the high end of the weight scale continues to increase faster than any other group of obese people, despite increased public attention on the risks of obesity,” study lead author Roland Sturm, a senior economist at RAND, said in a corporation news release. “But for the first time in the past 20 years, there is evidence the trend is slowing.”
While the rate is slowing, people who are over 40 are at the highest risk of severe weight gain, according to ABC News.
Weight loss options
For many struggling with obesity, the options to drop the unwanted fat aren’t easy. Some people turn to new weight loss surgeries to correct the problem; others opt to take medications that can aid in weight loss, like Xenical.
This weight loss medication is FDA approved and has a proven track record of helping people shed unwanted pounds; however, the medication is not a cure. Doctors say Xenical can help, but a person must stick to a strict regimen of diet and exercise for the medication to have the highest rate of success.
