Your Blood Type May Affect Your Risk for Erectile Dysfunction
If you’ve got an O blood type, you’re not just lucky because you can save anyone’s life as a “universal donor.” According to recent research, you’ve also got a lower risk for erectile dysfunction (ED) compared to A, B and AB blood types.

The correlation between blood type and ED

A 2016 study from Denmark found that people with non-O blood types (i.e., A, B and AB) were at a significantly increased risk for venous thromboembolic (e.g., blood clot in the leg) and cardiovascular events. The study’s results are reflected in this more recent ED research from Turkey.

In the new study, which was published in The Archives of Italian Urology and Andrology, the researchers used the International Index of Erectile Function-5 (IIEF-5) to determine the degree of ED in 350 patients. (The higher the score, the better the erectile function.) The mean age of the participants was 62 years and the ED and non-ED groups didn’t differ in demographic characteristics or age. The researchers found that:

  • Participants with type O blood had the highest IIEF-5 scores.
  • Participants with types A or B blood had a lower IIEF-5 score than type O. Type B blood had 3.5 times the risk of ED than type O blood. Type A blood had 3.9 times the risk of ED than type O blood.
  • Participants with type AB blood had the lowest IIEF-5 score. Type AB blood had 4.7 times the risk of ED than type O blood.

What’s within your control

Although you can’t change you blood type, you can control most other parts of your health to improve or prevent ED by eating healthy, not smoking, exercising regularly and controlling diabetes or other health issues by taking your medicines as prescribed.

Erectile dysfunction is often a tell-tale sign of vascular issues, so consider it a possible wake-up call to get a physical and full work-up.
