Researchers from the Temple University School of Medicine have discovered that fat cells in obese people are "sick" compared to cells in lean people. For their study, fat samples from the upper thighs of six lean and six obese people were analyzed. Significant differences in the fat cells from obese people and lean people were noticed. The fat cells in the study’s obese participants were found to be deficient in many areas.
The results of this study could help to explain the link between obesity and the development of conditions like diabetes and heart disease. The study can be seen in the September issue of Diabetes.
