Women claim Erection meds have changed their dating life, and not necessarily for the better.
Millions of men have turned to medications to revive their sex life, but there’s no little blue pill to help women. Several pharmaceutical companies claim to be working on a female Viagra, but until clinical trials are successful, women will have to wait. The trouble is, older women say the creation of Viagra erection pills has altered the sexual landscape.

Older women respond to Viagra’s popularity

While a woman’s pleasure can be enhanced when her beau takes an erection problem medication like Viagra pills, some women say it’s not all fun between the sheets.

Andrea D., a twice-divorced physician from Santa Monica, CA, and an over-50 dater, says Viagra gives a man a little more energy than she wants.

“Viagra has been liberating for men, but unless a woman is taking hormone therapy, she may have vaginal dryness and really not be that interested in the kind of driving, pounding intercourse he’s now capable of,” she writes on a 50+ website.

Other women claim Viagra is just plain unfair.

“Men have been saved from their middle-age sexual issues by Viagra and Cialis. They can be thirty again, while I have to deal with the sexual issues of being my age. It’s put the world on ’tilt,'” a 60-year-old woman wrote.

Advice from a doctor

A growing number of men have turned to Viagra for help. In fact, a study conducted by Express Scripts, a pharmacy benefit management company, found that nearly 20% of all American men over age 45 have tried them.

While the medication may seem like a wonder drug to men, doctors say it’s important for couples to talk about re-initiating sex.

Viagra celebrated its 15 year anniversary recently. Meanwhile, there is no female version of the drug.

“There is something about a hard erection that is extremely important to a man’s identity,” says Steven Lamm, MD, an internist in New York City tells Today.

“And of course most couples would prefer that the man be able to have one. But there are some who may have adjusted to life without sex. Perhaps the woman doesn’t really want it anymore, for one reason or another. And for those couples, the introduction of an erection problem drugs can throw them seriously out of sync.”

Communication is key. Doctors say couples therapy can be beneficial for couples with trouble communicating effectively.
