The average price of Viagra inched up slightly over the nine months from July 2019 to March 2020. However, the price of sildenafil, Viagra’s generic counterpart, fell more than 35 percent in the same period.

The average price for Viagra in March 2020 was less than 1 percent higher than it was in July 2019, nine months earlier, according to data from Secure Medical’s monthly review of select prescription drug prices. Viagra’s average price climbed a very modest 0.7 percent from $79.28 per 100 mg tablet in July 2019 to $79.86 in March 2020.

In stark contrast, the average price of Sildenafil, the generic equivalent of Viagra, was vastly lower in March 2020 than it was nine months earlier, falling 35.5 percent from $33.56 in July 2019 to $21.64 in March 2020.

Publix, a full-service supermarket chain in the southeastern United States, offered the lowest price for Viagra at $74.94, nearly $5 lower than the average. The chain also had the lowest March 2020 price for Sildenafil at only 79 cents per 100 mg tablet.

Viagra, Sildenafil Are Best Sellers

More than 22 years after its introduction to the market, Viagra remains popular. In fact, Pfizer’s “little blue pill” and Sildenafil, its generic counterpart, accounted for 65 percent of the Big 3 erectile dysfunction (ED) drug prescriptions (Viagra, Cialias, and Levitra) filled from December 1, 2018 through January 31, 2019, according to CNBC.com.

The CNBC report, based on data from GoodRx, indicated that Cialis and its generic, Tadalafil, were a distant second, making up 30 percent of all ED drug prescriptions filled in the time period. In last place, with a modest 5 percent share, was Levitra and generic Vardenafil.

Other Big 3 Prices Went Down

Viagra’s price increase from July 2019 to March 2020 was a small one,  but it still beats price trends for Cialis and Levitra, both of which declined over the same nine month period.

Although Viagra faced limited generic competition from December 2017 through March 2020, more entrants are likely to emerge after the April 2020 expiration of Pfizer’s final U.S. patents on the drug. Some market observers have argued that Pfizer has done its best to keep Viagra’s price at relatively high levels to reap as much profit as it can before the generic floodgates open.
