Further Price Declines Not Anticipated
With one notable exception, the average prices of all brand-name erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs fell from July 2019 through March 2020, according to Secure Medical’s monthly price review.
The sole holdout was Viagra, but even then, the price rose only slightly in March 2020 from mid-2019.
Still, barring factors like federal legislation to push prescription drug prices lower, it seems unlikely that the prices of branded ED drugs will experience further declines in the near future.
Price Trends for Popular ED Medications
Viagra, Levitra, and both formulations of Cialis (as-needed and daily) have all faced generic competition for at least 18 months. Nearly all brand-name ED drugs were lower in price in March 2020 than they’d been in July 2019.
- Declined a rather modest 2.3 percent from $70.60 in July 2019 to $68.96 in March 2020
Levitra and Staxyn vs. Vardenafil
- Fell 10.9 percent from $62.98 in July 2019 to $56.12 in March 2020
- Dropped 14 percent from $41.44 per 10 mg tablet in July 2019 to $35.66 in March 2020
Vardenafil (the generic of Levitra and Staxyn):
- Decreased by 56.8 percent from $48.88 in July 2019 to $21.12 in March 2020
Cialis vs. Tadalafil
- Moved from $37.60 per 20 mg tablet in July 2019 to $14.03 in March 2020, a 62.7% decrease.
Tadalafil (the generic of Cialis)
- Slid 58.6 percent from $7.61 per 5 mg tablet in July 2019 to $3.15 in March 2020
Viagra vs. Sildenafil
As previously noted, Viagra’s price actually increased slightly (0.7 percent) over the nine-month period from July 2019 to March 2020:
- Increased in price from $79.28 per 100 mg tablet in July 2019 to $79.86 in March 2020
While Viagra’s price rose slightly, its generic counterpart, Sildenafil, fell:
- Declining in price by 57.6 percent from $50.05 per 100 mg tablet in July 2019 to $21.64 in March 2020.
For the bargain hunters among ED drug users, generics clearly offered the best buys in recent months.
