Chinese researchers report that infection with the COVID-19 virus can lead to problematic hormonal imbalances in men. And those imbalances, in turn, could cause hypogonadism, which can result in erectile dysfunction among other things.
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to dramatically alter our lives to avoid infection with this potentially deadly virus. Retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses are shuttered, and we venture out only in pursuit of life’s most essential needs.
As if everything that’s already known about this novel coronavirus weren’t enough, a recent study suggests that the virus could upset the delicate hormonal balance in the men it infects.
Study Conducted in Hubei
And the study comes from researchers in China’s Hubei province, which is the purported birthplace of COVID-19, which since its emergence in late 2019 has spread to virtually every country of the world.
Researchers from Wuhan University’s Zhongnan Hospital and Hubei Clinical Research Centre for Prenatal Diagnosis and Birth Health found that men with the virus could have significant effects on the male reproductive system. Such adverse effects, they theorize, might be most impactful among younger men.
Researchers Recruit 81 Men
The Chinese researchers recruited 81 men with a median age of 38 who had been infected with COVID-19 and subsequently recovered. Ninety percent of the study’s participants had experienced relatively mild symptoms of the viral infection.
The goal of the study was to determine the ratio between blood levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone (LH) in men who’d been infected with COVID-19. Luteinizing hormone is a product of the anterior pituitary gland and plays a key role in controlling the function of the testes in men and the ovaries in women.
Disturbing Findings
Among the study’s participants, the ratio between testosterone and LH was found to be an average of 0.74, roughly half normal levels. A low ratio, such as that found in study participants, is often interpreted as a sign of hypogonadism, which points to a testicle malfunction that could lead to lower production of testosterone.
According to an article posted at Express.co.uk, hypogonadism in men often leads to erectile dysfunction and the development of abnormally large breasts.
This Chinese study, which was previewed online in advance of print publication, gives men another good reason to self-isolate and do all they can to avoid infection with this novel coronavirus.
