Publix boasted the lowest average price for Viagra during the second half of 2019. Its price was more than 8 percent lower than the average price at all conventional pharmacy retailers.

Publix, a supermarket chain that operates in the southeastern United States, had the lowest average price for Viagra during the second half of 2019. Among the 15 conventional retail pharmacies surveyed in the Secure Medical monthly price review, Publix’s average price of $71.39 was the lowest, coming in more than $4 below its closest competitor.

The average second-half price for 100 mg Viagra at all pharmacies surveyed was $77.37, 8.4 percent higher than the average price at Publix.

Impact of Pill Splitting

Although the recommended starting dose of Viagra is 50 mg, the Secure Medical price review lists prices posted for 100 mg tablets of the little blue pill. The cost of 50 mg and 100 mg tablets of Viagra is identical. Cost-conscious consumers prefer to buy the higher-strength tablet and then split it in half to yield two 50 mg doses. This effectively gives them two doses for the price of one.

Although pill splitting is safe for most erectile dysfunction medications, it is not recommended that you split any prescription drug before you discuss the matter with your physician. Some drugs should not be split under any circumstances.

Kroger Ran a Distant Second

Kroger, a nationwide supermarket chain, was a distant second behind Publix in terms of the lowest average price for Viagra during the second half.  Kroger’s average price during the six-month period was $75.62. In third place was Costco with an average price of $76.03, trailed by Fred’s with an average price of $76.06.

Nearly 22 years after its market introduction in 1998, Viagra remains the most popular brand-name ED drug. Its continuing popularity can probably be explained in part by a phenomenon known as “first-mover advantage,” a reference to the competitive edge gained by being the first company to introduce a new product or service.

Viagra, Sildenafil Still Dominant

According to a May 2017 article posted at CNBC.com, Viagra and its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate, accounted for 65 percent of all ED prescriptions filled between December 1, 2018, and January 31, 2019. Running a distant second, Cialis and its generic equivalent, tadalafil, accounted for 30 percent of all ED prescriptions filled during that two-month period.

Tracking Publix’s price for a 100 mg tablet of Viagra month by month during the second half, it began the period at $70.43 in July, remained there in August, and inched up a penny to $70.44 in September. In October it climbed roughly 1.5 percent to $71.47 and then jumped another 3.8 percent to $74.16 in November. In December, the Publix price dropped back to $71.46.
