The purported ability of a vegan diet to improve erectile function will undergo scientific scrutiny in an upcoming study. In the meantime, eating a plant-based diet could have a number of other benefits for your overall health.

Could eating a plant-based diet promote more robust erectile health or even eradicate the scourge of erectile dysfunction? Those are some of the bold claims made or at least implied in the recent Netflix documentary The Game Changers.

The documentary’s producers include famed film director James Cameron, martial artist/actor Jackie Chan, and bodybuilder/actor/governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. All three have at one time or another adopted the vegan lifestyle, and all follow a diet that’s either pure vegan or nearly so.

Experiment Conducted

In one of the documentary’s ED-focused passages, California urologist Aaron Spitz, M.D., conducts an experiment with three male college athletes. The length and girth of the volunteers’ penises are measured and monitored as they sleep.

On the first night of the experiment, the college students are fed a meal of meat-based burritos. Then, as they sleep, Spitz and his colleagues remotely gauge the effects on their nocturnal erections.

The second night, the men eat 100 percent plant-based burritos. And again, their penile activity and stats are monitored as they sleep.

Erectile Function Improves

According to the film, Spitz and his fellow researchers found that the students’ erections were 8 percent harder after the vegan meal than after the meat-based meal. Even more impressively, the scientists revealed that the students’ erections lasted 300 to 500 percent longer after the vegan meal.

While Spitz was quick to acknowledge that this three-man experiment was not a “scientifically validated” study, he did say that the experiment’s results were “very exciting.”

Meanwhile, late in 2019 or early in 2020, cardiologist Robert J. Ostfeld, M.D., plans to launch a study to scientifically evaluate the effects of a vegan diet on erectile function, according to a report at Insider.com. Ostfeld is with New York City’s Montefiore Medical Center.  Financing for this research will be provided by the Purjes Foundation, which is dedicated to  increasing public awareness about “the benefits of a plant-based, whole foods lifestyle.”

First Study of Its Kind

In an email to Insider.com, Dan Purjes, the foundation’s founder, said that he believed that this will be the first study of its kind. “To be clear, there are many anecdotal stories that are similar, but not clinical trials or other rigorous scientific studies.”

A vegan diet has also been associated, at least anecdotally, with improved heart health. And the link between heart health and erectile function is well established. As many cardiologists and urologists have observed, what’s good for the heart is good for the penis and vice-versa.

What Is a Vegan Diet?

A vegan diet is one that excludes all animal products, including not just meat but other animal-sourced foodstuffs such as milk, eggs, cheese, and other dairy products. By contrast, a vegetarian diet excludes meat from animals but may include dairy products or other nonmeat animal byproducts.

In the meantime, men who are suffering from ED, particularly male impotence caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis, can usually find relief from Viagra, Cialis, or another of the oral ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. These drugs and their generic equivalents are widely available but do require a prescription.
