Viagra hit the pharmaceutical market in 1997, and since then it has become a main stay. Millions of men have “talked to the doctor about erectile dysfunction” just as the hundreds of commercials for the drug have prompted them to do. While the drug is only gaining popularity there are some who would like it to work faster. Typically it takes about an hour for Viagra to kick in, but two Kentucky based researchers say they have a new to get Viagra into the blood flow faster.
From 0 to 60
Men taking Viagra do become accustomed to the pills time frame; however, two University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy faculty members have developed a nasal spray for Viagra, which gets the drug to work almost immediately after dosing.
“If a man takes Viagra and gets no response, he may become impatient and after 30 to 45 minutes be tempted to take one or two more tablets, just as the first one is being absorbed,” Lewis Dittert, Ph.D., professor in the UK College of Pharmacy said. “The result would be an overdose.”
With Viagra diluted in a nasal spray, this could be avoided.
The future
The causes of erectile dysfunction can vary, stress and other heart problems can add to the problem.
However, the two researchers believe this could change the way men take Viagra, it is an idea that is met with hesitation. “I know it’s a nasal spray, but it almost makes it seem like men could be snorting Viagra,” Tom Johnes said. “I don’t know how I feel about that, I think I can just wait an hour for the pill to do its thing naturally.”
The Kentucky researchers say they will continue their researcher and see if their Viagra spray will take off.
