If North Korea’s Neo-Viagra helps relieves erectile dysfunction symptoms, it should come as no big surprise. Lab analysis indicates the so-called herbal remedy contains 50 milligrams of Viagra’s active ingredient, which is the source of serious health concerns.

North Korea’s latest pharmaceutical product popularly known as Neo-Viagra has been purported to be an herbal medicine that counteracts a string of ailments. The drug is said to restore flagging sexual function in both men and women, relieve joint pain, and treat kidney malfunction, high blood pressure, and brain artery hardening.

Having been touted as the best of its kind and far superior to Viagra, many FDA-approved drug manufacturers are not convinced of its claim to be an all-natural ingredient product with no side effects.

Pfizer Lab Analyzes Neo-Viagra

In fact, an analysis by a Pfizer laboratory in the state of Massachusetts revealed that each dose of the North-Korean medicine contained 50 milligrams of sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra. This came up after a Washington Post contributor sent a box of the Neo-Viagra drugs to the lab for testing following a Pyongyang visit in May.

Pfizer wouldn’t confirm if the medicine actually works or if it poses any serious side effects as it had neither conducted any clinical trials nor had the contributor convinced any male counterparts to take the drug. However, according to Yasar Yaman, the Asia-Pacific director for Pfizer’s global security team, the fact that Neo-Viagra is being marketed as an herbal medicine while it contains sildenafil only in a different formulation is a problem that should not be ignored.

The state-owned manufacturer could face legal ramifications as Pfizer’s legal team is currently reviewing the possibility of filing a patent or copyright infringement suit against them.

Although similar in function, Viagra is a blue pill that is available in 25-, 50-, and 100-milligram doses while Neo-Viagra comes in reddish-brown granules. The counterfeit drug is being sold in North Korea and exported to China but is unlikely to hit the American market.

It isn’t the first time that North-Korean manufacturers have used questionable tactics to market a certain type of drug that turns out to be ineffectual or, worse yet, dangerous.
