Research scientists find that a curry-based ointment rubbed on the bellies of male laboratory rats helped them overcome symptoms of erectile dysfunction. The next step is to test this offbeat treatment on human males.

No word yet if your stomach will turn yellow, but rubbing a curry-based ointment on your stomach may help your symptoms of erectile dysfunction.

Scientists at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York have developed a curcumin-based ointment that seems to help rats with erectile dysfunction. Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the spice turmeric, which in turn is one of the primary ingredients in curry powder. The ointment, which seeps through the skin on the belly, is reported to dilate the arteries that carry blood to the penis. The hope is that the ointment will work on human males as well.

A sexual medicine expert at Imperial College London explained that curcumin is an antioxidant and could prevent narrowed arteries, a known contributor to erectile dysfunction. “But eating a Mediterranean diet and doing regular cardio exercise can also prevent the clogged arteries which cause erectile problems,” says David Goldmeier, M.D.

Previous studies, including one conducted by the University of Cairo in 2014, also found that curcumin helped treat erectile dysfunction.

Using Viagra for ED

If you have erectile dysfunction and don’t want to wait to see how the curcumin ointment research pans out in human studies, you can get a prescription for Viagra from your medical provider.

Viagra is the top-selling erectile dysfunction drug in the world and works for more than 80 percent of men. Unfortunately, Viagra is also the most counterfeited drug in the world, which is one of the reasons the Food and Drug Administration requires men to get a prescription for Viagra.

Sure, it may feel uncomfortable talking to your doctor about erectile dysfunction, but there are actually other benefits. First, you’ll be able to discuss any current health conditions or lifestyles — such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or smoking — that may be the underlying cause of your erectile dysfunction.

Secondly, the appointment will also give you the opportunity to discuss Viagra’s side effects, which are mostly mild, and ensure that none of your current medications is a contraindication for Viagra.
