Prostate cancer diagram.
Surgical removal of the prostate gland often leads to male sexual dysfunction because of the gland’s proximity to other sensitive components of the male reproductive system.

Early therapeutic treatment with sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, significantly improves the chances for a man’s recovery of erectile function after radical prostatectomy, according to a recently published study.

A team of South Korean urologic researchers recruited 120 patients who had just undergone robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy, a minimally invasive procedure designed to limit damage to surrounding nerve tissue. The study participants were then randomly divided into two groups.

Groups Given Sildenafil at Different Times

The first, designated the early group, began taking 100 milligrams of sildenafil twice weekly as soon as their urethral catheters had been removed after surgery. The second, or delayed group, was put on an identical drug regimen but one that began a full three months after the completion of surgery. All study participants were followed and periodically tested for at least 12 months after beginning their respective drug regimens.

The results favored early use of sildenafil. At 12 months after beginning their drug regimen, 41.4 percent of those in the early group had achieved full recovery of erectile function, while far fewer in the delayed group achieved comparable results. The study’s findings were published in the June 2018 issue of “The Journal of Urology.”

More than two decades after it was first introduced, Viagra still remains one of the most popular oral ED drugs on the market.
