A new study shows that a combination of erectile dysfunction drugs, including Viagra, and the flu vaccine may prevent the spread of cancer after surgery.

Putting Viagra up to a new task

The Ottawa Hospital’s head of cancer research and associate professor at the University of Ottawa, Rebecca Auer, who was the senior author on the study’s report says, “Surgery is very effective in removing solid tumors. However, we’re now realizing that, tragically, surgery can also suppress the immune system in a way that makes it easier for any remaining cancer cells to persist and spread to other organs.”

Auer and her team tested the cocktail of two erectile dysfunction drugs, including Viagra, and the flu vaccine on a mouse model that mimics the spread of cancer and found that the treatment created a 90% drop in the number of metastases.

The erectile dysfunction drugs and flu vaccine treatment is now being tested in a clinical trial with 24 people who are having abdominal cancer surgery.

How erectile dysfunction drugs help

Although immune cells normally help kill metastatic cancer cells, surgery sometimes creates something called myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSC). MDSCs are another kind of immune cell, which block the natural killer cells from attacking the cancer cells.

But research has shown that erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra block MDSCs. This allows the natural killer cells to fight the cancer. The flu vaccine helps stimulate the natural killer cells so they can do their job.

About Viagra

Viagra is the top-selling erectile dysfunction drug in the world. It works for more than 80% of men and is available via prescription from medical providers. The FDA requires a prescription to help ensure that the Viagra is safe and effective. Many of the fake Viagra being sold on the Black Market is not only ineffective, but it can actually be very dangerous. Some of the fake Viagra has been found to contain such toxic ingredients as detergent, road paint and even arsenic.
