Data in the medical world can sometimes be a convoluted mess. UBC professor and ophthalmologist Frederick Mikelberg was a little confused himself when he read a study that linked erectile dysfunction and glaucoma. So, the scientist decided to study the issue himself. As it turns out, Mikelberg confirmed that the two conditions are connected.

How the Study Began

Mikelberg began his research stemming from his skepticism of a 2012 Taiwanese study linking erectile dysfunction to glaucoma.

He wasn’t sure how the two conditions could be connected. Glaucoma is an eye disease that results in weakened vision, whereas, erectile dysfunction is a cardiovascular disease that makes it difficult for men to get an erection.

Mikelberg originally believed that if there was a connection between the two that it would have been caused by prescription eye drops used to treat patients with glaucoma.

It’s been reported that ED can be a side effect of people using medications with beta-blockers in them. The prescription eye drops contain the same beta-blockers.

The Results

Mikelberg had direct access to 167 patients with ED, and found that patients with glaucoma are 2.58 time more likely to have erectile dysfunction.

In addition, Mikelberg noticed there was a connection between the severity of glaucoma and the severity of erectile dysfunction.

Furthermore, he found that glaucoma medications had no effect on ED severity.

The Next Steps

Mikelberg hopes the information found in this study encourages doctors, including ophthalmologists, to ask glaucoma patients more questions about their sexual history.

Many patients won’t be aware that having glaucoma makes them more likely to struggle with erectile dysfunction. Asking questions about their history will help doctors diagnose ED, and help patients get treatment for the condition.
