You don’t have to be a celebrity to access medications that are effective against acne.

Being famous doesn’t make a person immune to acne. The celebrity lifestyle — which may include spending time under hot studio lights, tearing it up on the basketball court or football field, or frequent flying from one continent to another — can result in skin problems. And it’s a guarantee that celebrities hate acne as much as any other person. Acne is most commonly associated with adolescence, but even a person in his or her 40s may be unpleasantly surprised by the occasional pimple. Here are 10 celebrities, listed alphabetically, who have done battle with blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

1. Victoria Beckham

Sometimes women who “have it all” have something they don’t want: breakouts.

Like many busy moms in their 30s, Mrs. David Beckham has to deal with the occasional breakout. Frequent flying over multiple time zones, plus the demands of raising children and having a career, can stress the whole body, including the skin. Plus, the 30s are the prime years for hormonally-induced acne.

2. Miley Cyrus

If only acne were as easy to shed as a Hannah Montana wig!

Like teens and twentysomethings everywhere, Miley Cyrus sometimes has to deal with uncooperative skin. Some people find that eating too much of certain foods can lead to breakouts, while others find no connection between diet and acne flare-ups. But consuming a diet that’s high in lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains benefits the whole body; while it may or may not affect your skin, it certainly can’t hurt.

3. Cameron Diaz

She’s an All-American star with a common American problem: breakouts.

With her blonde hair and blue eyes, Ms. Diaz has the look of the All-American Girl. But like many young women, she struggles with acne and has not been afraid to speak up about her skin problems. When over-the-counter acne treatments fall short, fortunately, there are plenty of prescription-strength acne medications that can really make a difference.

4. Megan Fox

Too bad acne isn’t always as easy to fix as a ’76 Camaro in the hands of Mikaela Banes.

Even glamorous celebs like Megan Fox aren’t immune to breakouts. When the skin produces too much oil, when dead skin cells shed irregularly, and when bacteria build up, the result is irritation of the hair follicles of the skin, which leads to acne. Acne is not caused by dirt, but it can be caused by hormonal shifts and certain medications.

5. Paul Giamatti

Testosterone: it’s what makes you masculine, and sometimes it’s what gives you acne.

You didn’t think male celebrities were immune to acne, did you? Testosterone, which men produce at higher levels than women, commonly leads to increased oil production and acne. Although acne strikes males and females equally, when males (particularly adolescents) experience it, acne is generally more severe than in females.

6. Adam Lambert

Acne doesn’t detract too much from dark good looks, but it doesn’t exactly help either.

Singer, actor, and American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert has skin that is similar to that of many men approaching 30. While they may not have the severity of acne they experienced as teens, men in their late 20s and early 30s often still find themselves dealing with breakouts. Sometimes over-the-counter treatments can take care of the problem, but it’s good to know there are prescription options for when they don’t.

7. Frankie Muniz

The occasional blemish only made “Malcolm” seem more real to fans, but acne is annoying even if you’re famous.

Though he’s currently making his mark as a racecar driver, child star Frankie Muniz grew up in front of America as the star of “Malcolm in the Middle.” Like many adolescents, Muniz had to suffer through his share of skin problems as well. While acne does mostly clear up as teens start to hit their 20s, it’s not uncommon to experience occasional breakouts well into adulthood.

8. Nicole Richie

Hormone-induced acne can be unpredictable, just like the life of a 30-something mom.

As a busy mom and designer in her early 30s, Nicole Richie probably doesn’t have to cope with as many breakouts as she did 10 or 15 years ago, but normal monthly hormonal shifts can lead to acne in women in their 30s, and Richie is no exception. While it’s not used specifically as an acne treatment, some women find that certain brands of birth control pills sometimes get their adult acne under control.

9. Daniel Radcliffe

Spells can do a lot, but sometimes it takes prescription medication to deal with acne.

We’ve all watched Daniel Radcliffe grow up through the series of Harry Potter movies, and he has experienced acne along the way just like millions of other young men. Even though he may have legions of devoted fans, it’s practically a certainty that Radcliffe hates his breakouts every bit as much as your husband, boyfriend, or brother does.

10. J.R. Smith

Training as an NBA star gets you a great 3-point shot, and sometimes acne as a “bonus.”

Three-point wizard J.R. Smith knows what it means to work up a sweat. And, as with many young men, that sweat leads to a type of acne called pityrosporum folliculitis. Most people, however, call it “sweat acne” and it is a very common reason for trips to the dermatologist. Cleansers containing pyrithione zinc can help, as can cleansers with salicylic acid. Prescription treatments are available when over-the-counter methods are inadequate.

With any health complaint as common as acne, there are bound to be myths surrounding what causes it and how to deal with it. For example, many people think that chocolate and soda cause acne, though that has never been shown definitively. The link between stress and acne is equally as hard to pin down, though it may seem clear to you if you’re a college student who always breaks out during finals week. But no clear links have been established in the scientific literature.

There are plenty of myths around how to treat acne, too. You’re mom was right about one thing, however: don’t pop pimples. You can end up driving the infection deeper, which will make it hurt more and take longer to heal. Waiting out a raging pimple is no fun, but popping it can make the problem worse. Here is what dermatologist Alan Rockoff, MD with the website WebMD.com, says is a good daily skin care regimen for the acne-prone:

  • Cleanse two times a day with either a 5% benzoyl peroxide wash or a 2% salicylic acid wash.
  • Apply a gel or cream with 5% benzoyl peroxide to breakouts.
  • Before going to bed, apply a spot cream containing sulfur to affected areas.
  • If you moisturize, use a lightweight product and choose oil-free makeup.

When these methods don’t work, it may be time to try a prescription medication for acne, which you can obtain through eDrugstore.com. eDrugstore.com is an online facilitator that assists those with acne in obtaining genuine, name-brand prescription acne medications and rosacea medications like the very popular Metrogel. Women can also buy Vaniqa online to treat unwanted facial hair used by celebrities. What are you waiting for? Healthier skin and greater confidence are just a few clicks away.
