In an effort to create a healthier population, California has banned trans fat. Similar bans have been enacted in cities across the country, including New York City and Seattle, but California is the first state to ban the health-risking fat. The legislation, signed by Governor Schwarzenegger, will ban restaurants and retail food stores from using oil, margarine and shortening containing trans fats. Trans fats are being attacked because of their many negative impacts on health. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, trans fats have been linked to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, cancer, and even infertility in women.
The California ban will take effect on January 1, 2010. Violators could face up to $1,000 fines.
