O’Donnell’s surgery
O’Donnell didn’t go for the basic bariatric surgery, she opted for a vertical gastric sleeve procedure, where two-thirds of the stomach is removed.
“It’s very different than when you think of bypass surgery. It’s newer,” the former talk show host explained to Access Hollywood. “They remove two-thirds of your stomach, but everything else stays intact, and as a result of that, you can’t hold as much food.”
Like gastric bypass, she still has to watch what she eats.
“It’s a tool, it’s not an answer,” O’Donnell said of the procedure. “You can’t just get surgery and go ‘I’m done’ and keep eating the way you did. You have to change the way you eat, you have to exercise.”
The surgery was prompted in part by a severe heart attack that O’Donnell suffered in 2012. The 52-year-old actress has five children, four with ex-wife Kelli Carpenter and one with current wife, Michelle Rounds.

Other weight loss options
For some people, surgery is an option. For others, there are medications that can help you drop some unwanted weight. Medications like Xencial can keep your body from absorbing fat from the food you eat. It blocks about 25 percent of the fat in a meal.
Like gastric bypass, the medication is not a cure. You can’t take the pill and continue to eat whatever you want. You have to change your habits. You need to eat healthier, more balanced meals.
Of course, you can also try diet and exercising without medication, but some people get discouraged when they don’t see progress, which is why so many people give medications like Xenical a try.
