The Argentinean government plans to hand out free samples of its own generic Viagra. The country’s Ministry of Health says 200,000 doses of the popular medication will be given away to educate men about its benefits and the proper use.

Treating and educating men

Lifse, a state-owned pharmaceutical company, has plans to distribute the drug nationally in the near future. The company says the giveaway is not only to help men suffering with erectile dysfunction, but also to educate the public.

“The most famous medication in the world for improving the quality of life — even though no-one is going to lose their life over it — is the first to be made by the state in Argentina,” Guillermo Cleti, a LIFSE director, tells CTV News.

“It’s not only to attend to erectile dysfunction in men who need it, but also to avoid the abuse or bad use of the drug and to warn the population about its correct use,” he said.

Viagra’s other uses

The popular blue pill doesn’t just improve sex lives, it’s also known for treating rare kinds of heart disease, something the pharmaceutical company plans to pursue further.

Health Minister Miguel Angel Cappiello said the state is working on a syrup version of the drug to treat children with pulmonary hypertension, according to Argentinean news website infobae.com.

“It will be a benefit for a large and growing group of patients,” he said.

Viagra’s history

Viagra wasn't originally intended to treat ED.

Viagra’s blood-pumping abilities were actually discovered by mistake back in the 90s. Pfizer was originally testing Viagra to treat heart problems, when an unknown side effect was discovered. Experts changed the plans and started trials for erectile dysfunction.

Viagra recently celebrated its 15-year anniversary, with millions of men filling prescriptions for the drug each year.
