There’s no reason not to have a healthy sex life at any age.

Maybe the old adage is true: Use it or lose it, that’s what they say. And the same might be true for keeping erections strong for years to come.

Problems achieving and maintaining an erection do become more common as men age. But age on its own isn’t the reason. There’s no natural slowing down of the process; there’s an underlying condition to blame in most cases.

A medication-free regimen for preserving good erection health would certainly be an interesting avenue to pursue. And if that regimen is sex, and plenty of it? That might just be the best news yet.

Finnish Study Shows a Connection Between Less Sex and Erection Problems

Less sex and erection problems isn’t as overly simplistic as it sounds. In 2008, a Finnish study showed men who had sex regularly were less likely to develop erection problems. Conversely, men who reported having sex less than once per week doubled their chances of developing erection problems

Men of all ages form a strong connection between erection health and emotional wellbeing. And performance anxiety can make matters worse, as Dr. Doug Lording tells Australia’s ABC Health & Wellbeing.

The Finnish study, published in the American Journal of Medicine, included men aged 55 to 75. They had varying profiles. Some were married and others were not. Some reported medical conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, depression, and cerebrovascular disease. Some were smokers, and some were overweight.

The findings were interesting, to say the least, when compared with other similar men in the study. For example, men who reported having sex less than once per week were twice as likely to develop erection problems over the next 5 years than men who had sex once per week. But the same men were 4 times as likely to develop erection problems than men who reported having sex 3 times a week.

Can More Sex Restore Erection Health?

Research suggests that sex might help improve erections.

The Finnish study certainly suggests that an active sex life can help keep erections strong. But what about helping to recover some function that’s been lost?

Dr. Lording explains that the penis needs a good supply of oxygenated blood to stay healthy. Erections help provide that, including nighttime erections. But men who have had prostate surgery may have nerve damage which inhibits the natural erection process.

Nerves may or may not recover after prostate surgery. Generally, most recovery is seen within the first two years. But it becomes a catch 22, because recovery depends on the oxygen rich blood that erections supply, while erections are more difficult to achieve because of the nerve damage.

That’s where medication might help. Lording explains, “These men have a better long term outcome if they get erections.” And medications such as the PDE5 inhibitor drugs, Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and others could improve erections, which could, in turn, help with the healing process of damaged nerves.

When an erection happens, blood vessels dilate and the spongy tissue of the penis expands to accommodate the additional blood. This is essentially exercise for the penis. And the study shows that the more exercise you get, the healthier you’ll be.

There’s no infallible proof that facilitating erections through medication can restore erection health. But there is evidence to suggest that it might help.

Some Men Aren’t Suited for This Approach

Your doctor can tell you whether your heart is healthy enough for sex.

Exercise seems like a good thing for everyone, but that’s not the case. For some men, the exertion of sex isn’t safe. So striving for having sex more often could trigger a cardiovascular event.

Lording explains that for most healthy men, ramping up the sex life can’t hurt, and might just help. But men who have angina, extreme hypertension, or any cardiac problem that hasn’t been diagnosed by a doctor might be putting themselves at risk.

Erection problems are known as a potential early warning sign of cardiovascular disease. Remember, there’s no age where erection problems are considered normal.

Problems achieving an erection might be related to poor blood flow to the penis. And that could be caused by blood vessel blockages. Because the vessels that supply the penis are small, they could show signs of blockages much sooner than vessels in other parts of the body.

If your erection health isn’t what it should be, it’s important to talk with your doctor about symptoms before starting any new regimen. Even if that regimen is more sex. He can tell you if your heart is healthy enough for sex, and can advise you about whether more sex might improve erection health.

It’s also important to talk with your doctor to learn about medications that can help. The PDE5 inhibitors that improve blood flow to the penis are very effective, and they’re safe for many men. But some men shouldn’t take them.

If you take nitrates for chest pain, medications such as Levitra and Cialis can cause a dangerous and sudden drop in blood pressure. Men who take nitrates aren’t suited for PDE5 inhibitors.

You should tell your doctor about all medications that you take, and any health conditions that you have. If he determines that you can safely take them, erection health medications can help you increase your sex life and possibly improve erection health for the long term.

Like any part of the body, healthy blood flow is a good thing. It delivers oxygen, which is essential for healing as well as life in general. Getting more sex could very well help keep healthy erections healthy. And there’s at least some evidence that it could also help with regaining some erection health that might have been lost.

If you’re healthy and don’t need erection medication to increase your love life, then the exercise is all that’s left. And that’s the best part! But if you need a little help, talk with your doctor about Staxyn, Stendra, Levitra, or any of the PDE5 erection health medications. They could be just the boost you’ve been looking for.
