Viagra, the popular medication proven to improve a man’s sex life, is being put under a microscope. A new study looks deeper into the perks of the little blue pill for African American men. It’s the first time a study, specifically focusing on men of one race, has been done. Researchers wanted to make sure the medication worked as efficiently in African Americans as it does in Caucasian men.
The study
About 250 patients were randomly selected for the study. Some of the men took Viagra, others took a placebo. At the end of the study 81% of men said their sex lives were improved by Viagra compared to about 30% of those taking the placebo.
“We have now confirmed that Viagra is an effective and well tolerated treatment option for African American men,” said Jean Bonhomme, M.D., Founder, National Black Men’s Health Network.
At least 24% of black men polled say they do struggle with erectile dysfunction compared to 22 percent of white men and 20 percent of Hispanic men respectively.
“We need to be more proactive in studying and screening for ED as cultural influences make some of these men reluctant to seek treatment and/or limit their access to appropriate care,” added Bonhomme. “The renewed interest in ED that was prompted by the introduction of Viagra has likely given physicians the opportunity to diagnose and treat the diseases associated with ED which otherwise may not have been identified.”
