At the time of its introduction, Pfizer, the pharmaceutical company behind Viagra, said that developing the chewable form of Viagra was done in response to market research done in Mexico. Pfizer’s market studies in Mexico show that as many as 60 percent of those taking Viagra have been grinding the pills to make the drug easier to swallow.
This research data is what prompted Pfizer to develop the chewable version of its popular drug. Development on the new form of Viagra began four years ago. While it will work the same way, the chewable form of Viagra offers an even more convenient option, giving it advantages over the tablet form of the drug.
Beatriz Romero, Pfizer’s marketing manager in Mexico, said, “It’s a new alternative for patients and doctors.” The company will continue to sell the familiar pill version of Viagra, in addition to the new chewable tablets. According to Romero, “The chewable format could appeal to patients, particularly those who can’t swallow the tablets.”
According to a 2001 study, about 6 million Mexican men are suffering from ED. Pfizer estimates that about 1 million of them receive treatment for the condition. The company says that it sells about 3 million Viagra tablets each year in the country. This results in Mexican sales valued at around $55 million per year, according to IMS Health. Mexico is the second-largest Latin American market for Viagra, following Brazil.
