Ever wonder why more men are showing up in yoga classes? While we don’t have any real proof, it just might be because yoga — particularly certain yoga poses — can improve male sexual function and even stave off symptoms of male impotence.

Those claims are not ours but rather the conclusions reached by a team of Indian researchers who explored the effects of the ancient Hindu spiritual/physical discipline on 65 males enrolled in a summer yoga camp. The research team published its findings in the October 2010 issue of “The Journal of Sexual Medicine.”

Sexual Function Improves

The 65 study participants ranged in age from 24 to 60. Sexual function was assessed on the basis of their responses to the Male Sexual Quotient questionnaire, which was administered before and after the 12-week yoga session. Significant improvements were noted in all areas of sexual function measured by the MSQ questionnaire. These areas include sexual desire, satisfaction with intercourse, confidence, performance, erectile function, partner synchronization, ejaculatory control, and orgasm. All in all, a pretty persuasive argument for yoga, it seems.

Meanwhile, in an article posted at GoodMenProject.com, health and fitness expert David Gomes writes that the stress release and improved blood flow supported by regular yoga exercise helps to bolster erectile function and prevent male impotence. For those suffering from impotence of psychological origin, yoga’s ability to relax its adherents might be helpful in overcoming their erection problems. In the above-cited article, Gomes offers detailed instruction on seven yoga poses that are particularly supportive of erectile function.
