The New Product
The makers of the Segway have designed a pump so people can literally remove contents from the their stomach after each meal. A tube is surgically implanted into the stomach and comes out through an external “port” in the abdomen.
This allows a person to attach a pump to the port after eating and take out 30 percent of the food consumed before it’s absorbed into the body. A pouch of water is then pumped back into the stomach to help the remaining food breakdown, according to Fox News.
The FDA has not approved the pump yet; however, Aspire Bariatrics has applied for a patent.
Critics Say Pump is the Latest Gimmick
As the company works to get its new gadget approved, health experts are already speaking out against it.
“The new stomach pump may be one of the biggest gimmicks of all time,” Dr. Colella, director of robotic surgery at Magee Women’s Hospital and St. Margaret’s Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center tells NewsMaxHealth.
Colella says there are other proven treatments that should be considered long before the stomach pump.

“With current safety statistics showing that bariatric surgery is comparable to having your gallbladder removed and that the weight and health benefits are durable, this [stomach] tube hardly deserves mention in the same discussion,” in his opinion Dr. Colello says.
