Study of pot smokers reveals interesting findings.

A French research team says they were a little surprised when a recent study showed marijuana users were more likely to be thin.

Dr. Yann Le Strat, French psychiatrist and co-author of a new study in the American Journal of Epidemiology said:

“We were so surprised, we thought we had made a mistake,” he told MSNBC.

Not a Suggested Weight Loss Plan

According to the study’s statistics, 14 to 17 percent of people who smoke pot three times are week are obese. In comparison, 22 to 25 percent of people who don’t touch the drug are obese.

While the numbers provide an interesting theory, researchers are not advocating the use of marijuana as a weight loss tool.

“The take-home message is certainly not ‘smoke cannabis, it will help you lose weight,’” Le Strat said. “The possibility that cannabis is associated with a lower risk of obesity remains an interesting hypothesis, but certainly does not counterbalance its negative effects on health and mental health.”

Reasons Still Unclear

The reason pot smokers are skinner than others is still unclear. Researchers aren’t sure if those inclined to smoke are healthier in general or more prone to exercise. However, the drug is known to increase appetite and decrease physical activity, all the more reason researchers say they aren’t sure whey pot smokers seem to have a tinier waist.

One possibility is that pot increases metabolism, which can help in weight loss. The bottom line is more research is needed to understand this phenomenon.
