New York Governor David Patterson has proposed a state tax on sugared beverages in an effort to fight childhood obesity. According to Patterson, nearly one out of every four New Yorkers under the age of 18 is obese. Citing a Harvard study, Patterson points out that each 12 ounce soft drink consumed increases a child’s obesity risk by 60 percent.
New Yorkers will likely be unhappy about paying extra for sugared drinks, but the Governor feels that an extra surcharge is a small price to pay to improve the health of children.
